You said that a lot nicer than I was thinking in my head! No offense. The heat just makes me crabby.
Think January, think January.....

It was 115 in Phoenix yesterday, i lost a gold star to the heat, she was fine one minute and dead in the bushes the next. My birds are all free ranging right now, and in the middle of the city we have 1/2 acre of grass and trees with good cross breezes, but she didn't seem to handle the heat as well as the others... Still, i didn't think she'd kick the bucket. It's been a disappointing week, i've lost both of my gold stars. Everyone else is pale and panting, even with GALLONS of ice bottles in their water trough (which don't even last two hours) and foot bath, coop in the shade, cool dirt for dust baths etc. I re-fill the water twice a day, mist their favorite shade tree, give them cool fruit, and the poor things are still miserable. I guess some breeds just handle it better than others. *sigh* I actually considered bringing the whole flock inside.

This time of year REALLY makes me miss my hometown in Nor Cal.

I don't know what the high at the airport was, but there was a least one spot here in the city where the temp on my car thermometer hit 117 yesterday.

Y'all know I've lost three hens in the past two weeks to the heat... I now have an AC unit in the coop that I run from about noon until 9PM. I almost hated to shut it off before I went to bed but they all did look comfortable and had quit panting. I imagine it was low 80s in the coop when I shut it off.

Well it's 99 out there and I doubt the low will get below 90 this morning.

I'm praying my kids will take good care of the chickens cuz sweety and I are getting away.

I'm looking foward to a little humidity with these temps.

Okay, I've recovered.

Jameberlin, don't bring them in. I brought one in today to try for some photos, she pooped all over the place. Some photo.

LMAO! I'm SO jealous of people who can leave in the summer! My parent's are in Belize right now on some island getting sunburned and snorkeling. Brats. Then they're going to Maine for a week and i'm stuck here, double bagging dead birds for the freezer until i can get rid of them...

I sure wish we had the capability to run some AC in our coop, but we had to build a tractor so we could move it for irrigation. Bah. Who needs a green lawn? My chicken are HOT.

Don't worry Eggs4Sale, one look at the size of that RIR poop and there was no way i was gonna bring that sucker in. Plus i don't think my dear sweet (read: chicken hating) husband would EVER forgive me.

I gotta figure out where you live... 6 blocks is walking distance... but I can't think of any 1/2 acre lots over there.... I'm actually on the north side of Osborn Road.

I think my kids and my girls at work know, if I don't get out of here I'm going to go bonkers.

We did get our SRP electrical panel fixed yesterday, but the power was out from 7:30AM until 3PM and it was over 90 inside when the AC came back on. I'm running the two units hard and it's still only 79 in the house. I was asleep for a bit but I spent from 5 until 8 out trying to cool down the coop roof, get some cold water for the chicks and the roosters in their pen.

At the office it was 86 in my main operatory at about 3PM as the two AC units just aren't enough to cool the place down. I was actually thankful that my 5 and 5:30 patients cancelled!

What i wouldn't give for 79 degrees in the house! It stays at a chilly 80 (in the COOL parts of the house), we have a great room with huge windows and with the t.v. on the room can be between 85 and 90. BLAAAAH. Needless to say, i don't get much baking done during the summer, running the oven (or the dryer for that matter) during the day is almost a sin in this house.

We're actually on 30th, north of Osborn, we're one of the bigger lots here. The neighbors to the back of us are all on Sherran Ln., there's a homeopathic dr who shares a portion of our back fence who has a flock too, she has two roos (and is grandfathered in with two acres i've heard, but i'm not sure), a delaware and a frizzle. We're actually banking on the fact that no one's complained about her roos for three years, so maybe we can keep ours too. Haha!

I hear you about having to get outta here, you'd think that running an Italian travel business with my parents would give me more opportunities to jump ship but i just get to hold down the fort with the kid and the hubby while they're off globe trotting and emailing me about their shenanigans. Some day my time will come, someday.
