It was 115 in Phoenix yesterday, i lost a gold star to the heat, she was fine one minute and dead in the bushes the next. My birds are all free ranging right now, and in the middle of the city we have 1/2 acre of grass and trees with good cross breezes, but she didn't seem to handle the heat as well as the others... Still, i didn't think she'd kick the bucket. It's been a disappointing week, i've lost both of my gold stars. Everyone else is pale and panting, even with GALLONS of ice bottles in their water trough (which don't even last two hours) and foot bath, coop in the shade, cool dirt for dust baths etc. I re-fill the water twice a day, mist their favorite shade tree, give them cool fruit, and the poor things are still miserable. I guess some breeds just handle it better than others. *sigh* I actually considered bringing the whole flock inside.
This time of year REALLY makes me miss my hometown in Nor Cal.
