I understood your original post. The fact is black bears are like most wild animals. They almost never will charge and attack a human as long as they aren't cornered with no avenue of escape, the rare exception being rabies which makes a normally timid animal crazed with aggression, but rabies is rare in black bears.I think we ended up at cross purposes. When I mentioned live ammo, I meant in respect to avoiding anything to do with the bear personally, only resorting to the shotgun if he breaks in to attack. Last resort thing to hopefully save your life.
For the rest, go with electric fencing. Should do.
If a human is hurt by a black bear, it's almost always the human's fault for doing something stupid. I'm guilty of behaving stupidly around a black bear on a few occasions, and I was very lucky I didn't get hurt. Bears are incredibly strong and very, very fast. It's smart not to crowd a bear but to give them plenty of space to maneuver away from you.
The best defense against a riled up bear is not to behave stupidly.
