A couple weeks ago I asked here about lots of feathers in the run. The consensus was a molt. Now there are more feathers in the coop than litter. The girls are Buckeyes, born (hatched) 6/6/2010, and they first molted winter of 2010-2011, not so much last winter, so I didn't understand why they might be doing it now, in mid-summer. Maybe the extra hot weather? Anyway, they are shedding like crazy. I am providing extra protein and have shady areas for them. I water the run each day to help them cool off.
So, alls well.

I wish MOST chickens would molt over the summer rather than late fall like they usually do. It would make more sense to shed feathers when it's hot rather than cold
