Its FINALLY here!!---incubator temp issues on genesis

That's what thermostats are supposed to do, indeed, but I have heard of these models heating up too much when they are equipped with a turner. I have also heard of them arriving set at a temperature that is too high. If you must reset it, the website for GQF does have instructions for that.

I agree. I think the question is that if the incubator is cycling on and off then the heat from the turner is probably a non-issue.

k625, if your incubator cycling on and off?

Its hard to tell...sometimes the light blinks. somtimes off, and sometimes on....so Im not too sure

I am at work right not, so have not been able to chk temp. for the last few hrs.

Could it be because its in a closet??

by the way...you guys are AWESOME!!!

Hmm, I'd think being in a closet would make it better. It sure does, for me. Take a look at this instruction manual for the Genesis. It has information about setting it up.

And here is instructions for setting your incubator's thermostat.

I'll be receiving my Genesis in the mail within the next few days. I hope it works as well as people have told me it does. I had the opportunity to buy a Brinsea but this incubator was already on its way before I could cancel the order. So I'm stuck with it. We'll see how it goes.

And thank you! Just trying to exchange knowledge and help.

How much does one of these incubators cost? I want to start doing this too. But the tempurature part seems really hard. how do you turn 5 times a day, when you are at work!!!!!??????

If you are at work, sometimes just 3 turns a day is fine. I am not at work so I turn 5 times a day. Come to think of it, I managed to turn 5 times a day when I did work. If you work 8-5 or some hours akin to that, you could turn at
8:00AM
5:30PM
7:30PM
9:30PM

And depending on whether you go to sleep early or not, you could turn again at 11:30, or fit an extra turning at 6:30 or 8:30... Some turners turn every hour, so it won't hurt to do that yourself. I generally turn every 3 hours. My schedule looks like this:

10:00AM
1:00PM
4:00PM
7:00PM
10:00PM

Oh, and a styrofoam Hovabator is about $60-$200, depending which model you get and where you get it. I paid $160 for my turbofan model, and am paying over $200 for my electronic thermostat model. I think the place I get them from rips me off, but as I can't go back on it and care more about getting a reliable incubator than I do about spending too much money, it works for me.

My next incubator is going to be a Brinsea Octagon ADVANCE EX.

Temp report of the night...lol

Now I decided to move all the thermometers to where they are now sitting pretty centered on top of the turners....the one with the probe inside reads 99...the white colored (brand?) is reading 99.9, and then the other acutemp one is reading 101....ugh!!

I guess I am just going to have to break down and get one of these medical thermometers? What is the brand name, and what does it look like, and where can I get one? I feel like this incubator is turing out to be a lot more costly that I thought...lol, but it WILL be worth it in the end.

Would it be dangerous to put my eggs in now?

The Genesis 1588 with the 1610 egg turner shipping from Cutler Supply in Michigan to my location in Alabama would cost me $180 with shipping costs included.

The turner will take care of the turning for you and I believe handles everything from quail to goose eggs. The Genesis 1588 incubator has a fan and an electronic thermostat. I would probably call it the Cadillac of the styrofoam incubators. There are better incubators out there, but for the biggest bang for the buck I have to admit this one appears to take the prize.

Here's a link to the Hovabator Genesis incubator on the Cutler website:
Genesis 1588 and tuner packages.

The Hovabator 1602 is a non-electronic thermostat (wafer thermostat) still-air (no fan) incubator. This incubator with the same turner as mentioned above would run me $113 including shipping. Here's a link to the Hovabator 1602 with turners on the Cutler website:
Hovabator 1602 and turner packages.

These incubators should be placed in a room where the temperature stays within roughly a 10-degree range....65F-75F, 75F-85F,....

Hope this helps,
Ed

I've got no connection to Cutler, other than being a satisfied customer.

It really would be worthwhile to pick up a medical thermometer. Here's a $7.99 digital medical thermometer at Walgreens ...most any drug store or discount store will carry ones like this one. Really, the units that we want to use in our incubators are meant to be used as a weather instrument rather than an incubator instrument thus they've each have something like a 1.5+/- degree variance. Using a medical thermometer which is intended to measure human temperature is much more precise so we use them to check/compare the "weather" instruments.

Don't rule out the thermometer that came with the incubator...you can adjust it to get a more accurate reading, too!
