It's getting cold here...

It's starting to get cold up here in the nights (-14C) and there is some snow on the ground. I love the winter but I always feel so bad for my 6 chickens!!!! They really are 'chickens' about snow and cold weather. I just wanted to check with y'all that my set up is good for this winter. My coop inside is 5X7ft (including the nesting boxes) It has two 1ftx1ft ventilation holes and an approximately 1ftx1ft pop door that I keep open constantly. My run is 5ftx14ft. Water wise: I get them fresh water every morning for inside the coop and fill my outside bucket with snow.
Will they be fine this winter? I always get stressed out at this time of year

Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Sure hope Ottawa warms up, going to be there next week to let the Treasury Board have it.....

What breed of chicken are they? I have Jersey Giants who were made for that kind of weather, they LOVE the cold and snow! But there are also breeds with thin skin and feathers that need warmth. Maybe you should do a background check on the breed. Sometimes it'll even say when to put a heat lamp on them. If you have a heat lamp and a place close enough to plug it in (as well as a non-burnable place to put it) that might be good for the night when it drops below freezing. Though you might want to have more then one, they may start to fight over it! What we do with our chickens is we lock them up in their house with clear plastic on the door on very cold days (there are cracks and such that let in air) and on warmish days, we let them explore the Artic that is now their home! I hope this helped!

I'm pretty sure they are.

35f ,mist light rain, and 100% humidity, it is humid in coop too, birds seem happy though, temps not drop to 20f later in day with drier air and wind moving in. I would not like this for typical winter weather, as it is not for our area, clear,cold and dry is the norm...
