It's going to be super cold.

Are you talking about dry cat food or canned cat food?

Any catfood. It has too much salt. That's why it says CAT food lol.

As treats once in a while, ok, in a small amount. As a steady diet? I wouldn't do it.

Well, you know? Here we go again with the pages long arguments. I'm just saying. I was told by a poultry expert that catfood is not appropriate for poultry. I assume he knows what he's talking about, since he spent about the past thirty years and up to the current day in the poultry industry. I don't think he based it on a MYTH. He's considered an expert in the field by thousands of people. Am I interested enough to ask him to prove it in writing???? No. And as far as catfood itself, as I said...it does say catfood. It doesn't say catfood/ poultry food. Do what you like. Every body has their own ideas about what does and does not make their birds sick, and if you want to spend hours and hours trying to discredit common sense, I guess that's ok. I have better things to do. There's plenty of other things that can substitute for catfood. I don't intend to use it any more than I have been, and our birds don't miss it.

Well, to each their own. I am certainly not trying to tell you what to do but if you are going to use logic and are concerned with the amount of sodium in the birds food you should not feed crumbles either as it has approximately the same amount of sodium in it too.

Try finding processed bag feed that does not have sodium in it.. it is used as a preservative, same with people food, that stuff is in darn near everything frozen, canned or packaged, raising blood pressures across the globe, this is why i grow my own food and do my best to provide whole unprocessed food for my animals.
Even many whole/ natural food have sodium

PS for the most part we do not argue here, we have different experiences and opinions is all

When I had parakeets oh soo long ago, I remember being told salt was absolutely toxic to them. I know we are talking poultry, but I would think it would be somewhat the same. That's why I don't understand the salt content in bag poultry feed.
I am pretty sure cats are NOT supposed to have salt either but it sure doesn't keep big industry from adding it. I have read its added to "make it more palatable"

Thanks Kathy, you are doing a fine job of dispelling the myths!
You're welcome!

For those that are interested, here are the ingredients of one of the feeds I use. As you can see, salt levels are very close to those of the various dry cat foods.

The poultry "expert" should take another look at the salt levels of both cat food and poultry food. As a poultry expert he should be able to tell you what is an acceptable level, right?

Yup, thanks Zaz. I don't know why everything has to turn into an argument. My vet thinks everything but one or two select catfoods have waay too much salt for cats.
But, you have to feed your animals something. Vet will also tell you not to feed the dog catfood and vice versa. There are reasons. But as you (and I think I) said...to each his or her own. Just sharing my experience.

Misinformation is perpetuated unless myths like this are corrected. Another misinformation is that 1/2 table spoon of Corid powder is = t to 2 teaspoons of Corid liquid. For *years* not a single person on BYC sat down and did the math on that one, lol.
