It's going to be super cold.

How are you all on this cold morning?
Many of the peas with trains had a difficult time getting up in the trees to roost because their tails were iced over giving them a lot of extra weight on the back section, threw them off balance big time, I had to run several off the pipe fence  so their feet would not freeze.

It is 28 degrees and the sun is shining and it is suppose to warm up so they can all thaw out ,some of them may loose their crest as there is ice on them, seen one hen running yesterday cause her heavy crest fell over and was banging her in the head with all the ice on it.

I can see how peas could be killed by a predator in these conditions, they have extra weight, their feathers are stuck together and they have a difficult time staying balanced in the trees with these conditions all of which makes them vulnerable, glad I live here and don't have to deal with this daily, I would never be able to have free peas in these winter conditions if it were like this every winter

It is 41• here going to reach 62• today and tomorrow before we go back in the deep freeze!

Zaz,,I have had a similar problem to your iced over peas in the spring, but because of mudd in the ends of their trains.Theres not much grass growing in their breeding pens and when we get heavy spring rains it don't take long and the males trains are matted down because of mudd. Many times I've had to catch these males and then use a garden hose and wash their trains to keep the ends from breaking off.I now put a layer of straw on the ground in the pens where dirt is more than grass before the birds are allowed to go into the pens outside.
Wind blew like a hurricane here last night. At the end of our driveway we had a drift that always forms and it was 4' deep or more this morning.Tooka freind of mine 1/2 hour to bust thru it with a snowplow on his pickup truck. Forecast has changed some, snow again tomorrow, but the cold is still coming Monday and Tuesday.

They are thawing out nicely and it would seem that only the yearlings trains that were not as big were the ones that froze over and caused problems, I was thinking of cutting this one peas train off if this weather did not let up it is pretty messed up at this point.

I was just glade everyone made it thew this mess without injury

Its -9 F here with the windchill, and roads are again closed. Hoping they will be open this aft, need to check on my pea barn for snow load and freezing. So far inside the barn has remained around 35 as its all sealed up. Water is still flowing, but I need to watch that so that we don't have any pipes freezing...would not be good, no shutoff between the pump in the shed and where it comes out of the wall in the barn.

It might snow here tomorrow night. today it has been in the 50's and 60's but tomorrow it will get cold and their has been talk of schools closing for two days because of a possiblity of black ice. I really hope school is canceled for two days because I want a break.

1:50 A.M. this morning,,3 degrees outside and we lose power for 1 1/2 hours
