Don't laugh! It's not hard to do, once you start. My wife and I have over $10,000 in two coops and a remodeled 12x24 area of the barn for chickens. We made the mistake of just deciding what we wanted, started, began buying materials one small truckload at a time, and by the time we added up the receipts, it was too late. We have ten bbs Orpingtons and six silkies. Go figure.
I realize now that if I were starting over, I would just build one large inexpensive PALET coop, but still with lots of expensive 1/2-inch hardware cloth for the run. A super-safe run is worth anything for the owner's peace of mind 24/7/365.

Mine was more like $1500 -- and we were cautious about spending every step of the way -- "Do we already have 2x4's? Aren't there 3" exterior screws on the shelf?" And the expense wasn't in making it cute -- most of my cost went to making it warm and secure. I've brought these little beasts here -- they aren't going to suffer on my watch if I can help it. And while I'm at it, me and my neighbors are not going to look at an eyesore.

Well, that's how it starts out anyway

Only reason our girls have it nice is because we had the building and wasn't using it. As far as fixing it up to look like others, well, that's a work in progress. I have modified it as I've had time. But for 10 hens and a rooster, it does the job. Nice roost, nice nesting boxes, in my mind anyway. Good run. I just figured a happen chicken lays alot of eggs

My 2 new introductions to the flock were sleeping in tree too. Finally caught them and stuffed em in the run/coop area. They spent 2 nights in there, I hope it did the trick.

I'll know when I go out to close up the coop tonight.

My coop isn't the fanciest either, but I think it's nice. I guess the main reason I wanted something "cute" is because my coop is out near my garden, where I spend alot of time. It is kind of a "focal point", if you will. If I am going to be out there all the time, I want something nice to look at. We are on a tight budget, so we didn't spend alot of money on it, but did get all the necesseties for a good coop covered. We are now in the process of building another one. This time, we are going to use a bunch of free pallets as the frame work, then apply siding to the sides. Hopefully this will turn out good too.
