Hey all,

Or should I say y'all. Finally got to my new house down in Lafayette, Louisiana! Waited for the first huge rain storm to check for flooding and I think we are in the clear.

I am in a small neighborhood with a ~2500 sqft backyard. In the far back I plan on taking out that bush and building an openish coop/run, from tree to fence I have ~8' and from back of the fence to legally "25ft from sleeping quarters", I have ~15'. Fence is around 6 ft high. The building you see to the left of the picture is a shed. I think that is ok to build the coop near, since it is not a sleeping quarter. I figure building the coop/run there will provide shade from the trees and not take up too much of the yard. I plan on letting the chickens free-roam during the day for fresh air. And some entertainment.

We have some trips in July, so we are planning on getting some chicks end of July (not sure if that is too late, I am new to this), so it gives me about 27 days to get the coop/run built and ready for them.

Only birds I am thinking of getting right now is Australorps, but would love to have a mix egg bag, but I just need to make sure they are backyard friendly, don't want to annoy the neighbors with super noisy birds.

Anyway, I will be making plans tomorrow for the coop/run and posting them, would super love to hear peoples advice. Oh, how many chickens am I getting, no idea.. If I can build the run 8x10, and the coop 8x5, that would give the 4 sqft in the coop per chicken and 10 sqft per chicken in the run, meaning I could get 8 birds. As mentioned, they are going to roam most of the day in the backyard, but still want them to have ample space. We eat about 6 eggs a day, so finding a nice balance to never have to buy eggs again would be amazing.

Thanks for listening! See you all tomorrow, Happy 4th.

Some cool ideas! I really like the red barn one, would give some color to the back yard! I was honestly thinking of getting 4 australorps, 2 silkies and 2 easter eggers. Someone said silkies might not do ok with the bigger birds, but if raised together they might be fine. Silly pecking order.

Yep, great minds think alike lol! That would be a great mixture! I just love silkies!:love:love

I got my birds from Cackle Hatchery in August and IIRC they still ship some breeds in October so you have time.

Think about plenty of ventilation in your coop. Dunno if mosquitoes are a problem for chickens or not so you might think about screen in addition to predator protection welded wire. I miss the food down there but not the heat.

If you want lots of eggs Australorps are the most reliable out of your list. Barred Rocks are really good too! If you want colored eggs Legbars are typically more reliable than EE's.

Now I want a legbar, but looks like they might stop shopping them in June!

Thanks, I will have to check them out!
