This is the chronicle of the Itty Bitty Chick city, and the raising of a chick with EVERYTHING wrong.
"Peanut" an OEGB named due to him/her being about the size of a packing peanut, was trapped in the egg..covered in dried membranes, had to be hatched manually, and was born with the worst case of spraddle leg I've ever seen. Being so tiny, Peanut was too small to join the brooder with the "normal" chicks. After some Poultry Physical Therapy (A bandaid to fix the leg problem!), I made Peanut a seperate home. Fearful that he would die of loneliness, I gave him two button quail as roommates.
Peanut now believes the button quail to be his babies, and they think he's their mommy. I've never seen a "broody" 3 day old chick, so I like to think of him as more a volunteer in the "big brother, big sister chicken program". I am totally reliant in BYC for raising these chicks, dealing with their small issues (Ha Ha!) and helping them to grow into healthy, permanent, loved family members.
Try and seperate this unlikely trio and the peeping will run you out of house and home!
First.. the characters:
Five day old "Peanut".
The "babies", 2 day old "Button" and "Thread".
"Hatching is hard, it required a lot of nap time."
"Alright guys, this is where the food is. And this is how you eat it!"
"Everyone needs a wingman."
"MY baby."
"I'm here for you, buddy."
