Itty bitty chick is wasting away....

Not that. I have a brooder FULL of chicks with that. I am Very familiar with those symptoms, far more than I really wanted to be. That's why I am giving medicated feed to ALL the chicks in my care.

Huh. I was told medicated feed does not work well.

Haven't heard that myself. The brooder with symptomtic chicks also has medication in the water. They are doing quite well, actually. There is almost no blood in the brooder this evening. But the rest of them are getting medicated feed to hopefully slow or stop the spread of this chick killer.

My current ill chick has had NO exposure to the sick chicks and I have been VERY careful to avoid cross contamination. (I am a health care worker, so avoiding cross contamination is part of my DNA)

The Amprolium in the medicated feed does not keep the chicks from getting sick, it helps them survive the infection so they can build the natural immunity they need.

Thank you for that info. I will discontinue the use of medicated feed with the ones who are NOT infected. Saves me money too.

I will continue it's use with the ones who are infected.

I wouldn't do that unless those chicks have already had it and survived. They will definitely be exposed and if they haven't already built up their natural immunity from exposure, they will need the Amprolium to help them build that immunity when they are exposed.

The ones I am considering discontinuing use of the medicated feed with are less than 3 weeks old and are totally separated from all other poultry and will remain separated from about another month, depending on weather and how fast they feather out. I will provide them with proper "medication" when they are exposed, as I am doing for the one group. I am just looking to save myself a little money until such time they are exposed....and I know they will be, they are the youngest of my birds....by the time they go outside everyone will already have built immunity except them.

Thank you for taking the time to respond....I am still learning and appriciate the help
