Iv got the racoon blues!!! Help! *UPDATE* caught the coon! W/ PIC

cats are not interested in soda. dogs....maybe. My dog is a pig. She'll eat/drink anything. Ive used the "death cocktail" several times. an dog or cat ever got into it, knock on wood. I know cats are not interested. And in my opinion, dogs should not be runnin loose at all hours of the night. Where I live, the only dog I have to worry about is my own, or a coyote. my neighbors have dogs, but they are far away and not really wanderers. If you live in suburbs, you might have more probs with neighborhood pets.

Yes, this will kill a dog, cat or really any critter that takes a swig

Well I caught the coon! I used the method that Sunny_Side_Up mentioned and a peice of ham for bait under the trap. Worked in 1 night. Im going to keep trapping for a few weeks to see what else I can catch. The coon I caught looks pretty young so I am thinking there are more around. Here is a pic of the coon waiting for Animal Control to come.

Why do these evil little buggers have to be so cute?

Yay, glad you got it!

And even more glad to know you're not releasing it but having ACC come take care of it! They don't look cute to me any more, there's just so darned many of them they're like big rats with masks & bushy striped tails. And their almost-human hands creep me out.

Their populations have increased along with development and they're being further encouraged by ignorant folks leaving out pet food dishes, uncovered garbage cans, and even intentionally feeding them. I think they're cute in cartoons or 'way out in the woods, but not in my back yard.

Yay! WE're still trying to get our second one. We know there are 4 of them, saw them the first night. Caught one in the trap the very next night .. haven't caught one since..

Ugh! We will NOT give up!

unfortunately the coons will not give up either! Not until you have no chickens left anyway.

They are pretty cute, arent they.....
Every time we catch/kill one and I feel a little pang of guilt for "murdering" an animal just doing what nature tells it it needs to do to survive, I look at the pile of feathers and feet left from one of my poor chickens. that is NOT cute. Clean up the mess leftover from the birds you lost, and think about how "cute" that pile of carcass and feathers is.

HOW CUTE IS THAT RACCOON NOW?

we dont get coons in the uk (coon over here is a derogertory word for a certain ethnic race here) part of me wishes we did (ok its only a tiny part) as they sure do look like theyd make a nice pair of gloves

anyone know what they taste like?

Hey crossedwires, it is also a very derogatory word in the same way here... but it's also a totally innocent nickname for a raccoon when used in the proper context so there's no danger of misunderstanding here in the US. It's all about context and I can't imagine that anyone here would even think of the 'nasty' side of the term the way we're all using it!

I've got one curious about my coop now too... I live in the middle of a wooded lot, with a river behind the house and we always have them, but as long as they aren't nosing around the coop, I let em live. Well, my traps are going up tonight. Does anyone know if there's a worse smell than raccoon poop? ('nice' word should be replaced with the 'bad' word because it's a BAD smell!!!!)

I've been told I'm crazy for not trapping them more, but honestly, I'd be trapping and shooting them non-stop because of the rural and wooded area I live in. Since they are territorial, as long as the ones in 'my' territory leave my critters alone and mind their own business, I'm fine with them. I keep my birds locked up tight and watch for any sign of interest... Now, I'm going to trap this nosy one or two, and I may have a real aggressive one move in, and I'll have to trap him or her, and then on and on. ...but that's the way it goes. These ones seem to have lost fear of approaching the coop and even the back door, so they've got to go.

Oh, and I too tie down the bait and wedge the trap so they can't tip it over to get in to the bait with their cleaver little paws.

//edit to add, I've heard they're quite tasty but haven't tried them. Of course I knew a lady who raved about how good possum tastes too, but I saw one crawl out of a dead cow's carcass once, so I can't imagine ever eating opossum either!!

Yes some people do eat them.

I have had a few as pets, poop not as bad as a cat.

I also have alot of woods with a creek....only trap and kill the ones that come up around the pens. Its more to control the numbers, don't want to kill all of them. Matter of fact I keep most of my land set aside for all wildlife. I have more trouble with Dogs an Cats running loose. Not only killing my birds , but all the wildlife. Song birds, baby rabbits, wild turkey and etc. People need to keep their pets under control.
