Hi. After a failed attempt to keep some chickens last year, I am trying again with a new plan.
Last year I learned how determined the predetors are to have a chicken dinner. Mainly fox and red tail hawks.
I built a real pen this time with wood and wire. The metal fence post and wire were too flimsy. I also put a battery powered electric fence around it. so far so good.
I have two white rocks about 8 weeks old now, and two black chicks about 5 weeks old now. The black chicks were bought at a farmers market and supposed to be barred rocks but they are not. I think they are black sex links. All hens i hope.
We live in south eastern pennsylvania.
I made my own coop off the top of my head. Wish i had better carpenter sence. I cut a hole in the bottom under the perch and put in a grill grate so the droppings would fall through. I can cover the hole in the winter. I still have to add more vents and a nest box addition.
Glad to be a member now. Hope i have the time to keep up with it .
