Hi everyone!
Thank you so much for all the awesome information and advice that I've been able to read and search since I got my first chickens last year. I'm gonna use the template to introduce myself because otherwise I'd ramble on forever:

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We got our first chicks last year, mainly for eggs and a little fun for the family. Started with three Americauna and three silver lace d Wyandotte, one SLW turned out to be a rooster and one of the americaunas had a heart attack after one of my chocolate labs got her and ran all around the yard with her. Luckily he has been trained to hunt fowl and therefore has a soft mouth so we had that one for dinner. We keep thinking we will have that rooster for dinner someday... But he is a good protector so we keep him around.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I just got ten day old chicks last week to try to grow our flock. So currently 15 in all.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Three SLW, including roo, two americauna hens and one americauna chick, five buff Orpington chicks, two Rhode Island Red chicks, two Plymouth barred rock chicks.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
A friend

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love to garden, though I'm not great at it. I read a ton.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I live in steamboat springs, Colorado. Married with an almost four year old daughter and an 18 month old son. Two chocolate labs- who now both co exist peacefully with all the chickens. I am a registered nurse with focus on labor and delivery, ob/gyn, and pediatrics, but I am staying home with kids right now. I also teach and perform bellydance.

That's me in a nutshell.
Thanks again for all the great help I have already received!
Meg

Geez, I would have a heartache too, if I was locked inside somethings jaws. Dogs and chickens need to be kept apart. I have never heard of a chicken killing any dogs.

Welcome to BYC!

You have a nice group of birds! Enjoy all your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

Ha! Well, I can say with complete certainty that neither of our dogs will harm any more of our chickens or chicks. They have it all worked out.
Our rooster went after the neighbor's goofy and curious dog with a vengeance, even though poor Everest was just trying to get into their scraps. It was pretty funny. We always know when the neighbor's dog is lurking around because the rooster has a distinct "Everest alert" now.
On a solemn note, we will be culling the poor rooster this weekend. He is gorgeous and a great protector of the flock, but he hates everyone but me, goes after the kids if he gets out, wakes them up too early in the morning, and is over-mating the poor girls. I did saddles for girls and husked his spurs to help with the last problem, but the safety of the kids is the main thing. We have been taking about doing this since we realized he was a roo last summer, but I thought maybe I'd incubate some eggs this spring, but none of the hens are broody enough and I don't really want to do it myself.
Anyhoo- anyone got any good recipes?
Meg ;)
