Hello!
I'm a teacher in North Carolina, and I decided I wanted to start a little flock for some eggs and some entertainment. I've always loved chickens. My grandmother kept a few. They are so funny! So my husband, who is a good sport, set about building me a coop, although I'm not sure he was thrilled at first.
It turned out pretty fantastic, considering neither of us has any carpentry skills to speak of, and we are headed to a chicken stock fair next weekend to get some girls! The hubby warmed up to the idea pretty quickly, and I almost think he's as excited as I am. Who knows what we'll end up with, but I was thinking a speckled sussex or two, a barred rock or two, and maybe an easter-egger if I can find one. I'm looking for a friendly bunch who will be more pets than anything. We've got a couple dogs, but considering that they are in love with the cat and the guinea pig, I'm pretty sure they'll be sweet to the chickens. The big dog is a mastiff/ St. Bernard mix, but she treats the guinea pig like her baby.
My husband and I are avid outdoors people, hiking, camping, and gardening in most of our free time when the weather allows. We live very close to the Blue Ridge Mountains, so it's a perfect place to be. I have a huge vegetable garden that I'm sure the chickens will love more than I will want them to, but I'm okay if they scratch it up a bit looking for treats, considering that we grow way too much food for the two of us. I've heard that chickens love the compost pile for all the juicy bugs they can find, so they'll be happy in the back of my yard for sure.
I've included a couple pictures of the coop. If you have serious carpentry skills, please don't look too closely. Maybe just squint or something so you don't see the flaws. I think it's fabulous!
We're calling it the Miami chicken condo, considering the bright colors! The rest of our property is brick and seas of green, so we wanted it to pop a bit. My friend says I have to name the girls Blanche, Dorothy, Rose and Sophia. Maybe.....
