Yeah, WAYYYY cool! I'm thinking keeping chickens is part of the new "green" movement. They recycle your kitchen scraps into lovely manure to add to your compost pile with the bonus of producing healthy eggs... the best of all worlds! Not to mention how they bring people together.. ALL good.
I think there is a underlying instinct and desire to farm in a lot of people. Everywhere you look there is talk and evidence of how bad the food that we have been eating is for us. With all the antibiotics, growth hormones and inhumane treatment and the health issues they cause, the green movement is way overdue. And there is a great satisfaction in raising something from one day old and have it give something back in return. It doesn't hurt that they are cute, friendly and great entertainment.
I think in many ways, we are the new pioneers. We are going back to simpler ways of life and others are sure to follow.
You did create an empire. And it will spread. Who knows....can goats be far behind?
Gosh, I wish I had friends, neighbors or even family that loved my chickens! Everyone that knows that I have chickens thinks I am nuts. They ask "Why?" alot! We were even discussing this with my mother (who lives with us) last night at dinner. She just doesn't get it! But, she sure wasn't questioning it when she got up this morning & made herself some scrambled eggs - eggs from my hens, the freshest eggs around!!
I have chickens just for the fun of it! We do eat thier eggs, but that's it (DH & I are vegetarians). I love my chickens! They are like my babies, but no one understands.
You are very lucky!!

You are absolutely right! It's not a "new" movement, it's revisiting what our ancestors survived on for thousands of years. There is so much pride to be had in farming. Growing your own food, raising and respecting animals. I'm so happy we are all a part of it.
