I've got an awful lot of chickens dying....

You probably don't have time to get a necropsy done and act on the results before your new chickens come, but I think you need to do it anyway. At least you will know for sure what you are dealing with.

Oxine would be much better than bleach. Bleach will not kill everything that might be on your property.

Amprolium is not a sulfate, but it is a treatment for cocci. However, you will need more than medicated feed, which just keeps the population down, you will need either amprolium (by itself) or Sulmet. You can put the new ones on medicated (with amprolium) feed and just keep an eye on them. But if there is some disease like MG or CRD in the flock, that setup will not protect the new ones, and sanitizing won't help either, it will be transmitted through air.

BTW, there's a thread on here somewhere about holding a body for necropsy. Don't freeze it; refrigerate it. I don't remember what else they said do.

Is it good news that I'm not worried about having a body to supply the vet? Sigh.

I'd read that Corid is preferably to Sulmet. Is that so? A 7 day treatment, as high as possible, with Corid and then feeding Chick Starter with Amprol.... Would that be standard operating procedure, then?

why did you not get the medication for coccidiosis
like sulmet
or corid 9.6%?

the antibiotic just agrevates coccidiosis

get busy and use the medication for coccidiosis

ALSO HERE IS ANOTHER THING
HOW MUCH ELECTROLYES DID YOU USE FOR THE CHICKS?

to much to where you see color in the water WILL KILL YOUNG CHICKS

so drop the electrolytes period

how about the temp of the brooder?

also how old were the ones you had free ranging??

HERE IS A SIMPLE SOLUTION

for the new birds coming
sanitize with clorox 2-10 parts colorox and water NOW
all the feeders and waterers and the living space for the new chicks so it cam lay dorminant for a while

please DO NOT GIVE ELECTROLYTES

that will kill chicks very readily

mcmurray has been over whelmed with orders and my theory is the chicks came from weak eggs

as this happens and their telling you it was alfalfa is a lame excuse

making it your problem

where they vaccinated for any thing?
are they new chicks vaccinated for any thing
cut out the medication
and feed all the rest coccidiosis medication and a wet mash probiotic
and as soon as the 7 days of coccidiosis meds are done
get the 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar in their water

what did the chicks act like that your husband killed?
also what kind of feed are they on?

do the swap meet chicks seem to have a respiratory disease?

well you don't feed new chicks corid only those with the bloody listless type that are huveled up in the corner

you can feed amproliyum starter medicated
I will add the coccidiosis treatment on next post

email me any questions

I would put them on 7 days of sulmet or corid in the water
for the coccidiosis now that you have it

Nathalie's explanation of sulmet is
Sulmet is sulfamethazine. Corid is amproylium
Sulmet is used for treatment against bacterial scours in cattle, which just happens to be E. coli.

It also is used against Coryza, Pastuerella, and Salmonella Pullorum in poultry. It's an old fashioned sulfur drug, very broad spectrum, safe for babies, easy to give.

then give them the wet mash probiotic so they can make good gut flora

Here is the way I would use and have used sulmet for coccidiosis

Now what to do and what to feed after medicating for coccidiosis

to make sure they eat the medicated wet mash do this first and second day of treating and medication in the water 7 days
also I use the wet mash with sulmet or corid

THIS CAN BE MADE INTO 1 QT OF DRY FEED
2 QTS OF WATER
AND THEN ADD THE TSP OF SULMET

if using corid 9.6%
1 QT OF of dry mash
2 QTS of water
add 2 tbsp of corid 9.6% to the water
feed 2 tsp per chicken for a feeding
feed this two mornings to get the medication in the birds
also at same time put the corid or sulmet in the drinking water for 7 days

SORRY i MISS TYPED THE RECIPE

each chick get 2 tsp of the wet mash with coccidiosis meds

speckled hen gives corid(9.6%) liquid in 3-4 tbsp per gallon of water
and after medicating give the following things

either the corid amproylium or the sulmet will work but now you have a difficient gut problem with the E.coli
and it needs to have the Vitamin E and selenium put in the wet mash probiotic to help the E.coli gut problem

do this

now the
natural probiotic recipe is is:
1 qt of dry crumbles
2 qts of milk, sweet, sour, or buttermilk or a mixture of all or some
1/4 cup of non flavored yoguart ( no artificial sweetmer)
mix good

NOW THE IMPORTANT INGRIEDIENT FOR EACH CHICK FED
and add 1- 1000 mg of Vit E by cutting the end off the vit E capsule for each chick fed this wet mash
and 1 seliunium tablet crushed for each chick fed this wet mash
putting it in the wet mash

this for each chick your treating
so for each chick use 2 tsp of mixture and 1-1000 mg of Vit E
and 1 sleinium tablet crushed in the wet mash probiotic
twice a day for them till the manure is solid

and feed each chick
2 tsp full of the wet mash probiotic and what they will clean up in 20-30 minutes
then clean wet feeders and restock dry crumbles

do this twice a day for a week
till the chicks manure is right
then quit the Vit E and selinium make just the wet mash probiotic
then once a week for life

All the while after mdicating the birds use
do not use ACV with medication

2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar per gallon of the chicken water so their gut flora wil be regulated
they should have this at least 3-5 days a week
then three days aweek after they are over coccidiosis

the vit's are neccessary to clean up the damaged gut problem
take all the electrolytes out of the water

email me any questions so you are not confused

at this point oxine would be useful but it is the week end and clorox 2-10 parts clorox and water
to disinfect the side walls and the floors andm equipment and leave standing empty and drying off is better than
nothing

also take and get something that will be a solid long tray to put clorox in to step in and out each time you feed and water each pen

the clothing will carry germs also

thus do not wear same shos and clothes to do the new birds chores

you can order oxine from

you do not need a body to test for cocci a simple poop sample (fresher the better) to the vet for testing will tell you. All vets can do the test since cocci is something that all animals get (dogs, cats )

But to me it sounds like thats what you have. Go to First State Vet supply he has Amprol liquid (and sumet I beleve) he makes it in the liquid form so that you dont have to buy enough for 10,000 birds because it is sold usually in huge quantities.

Since that will take a while get powdered goats milk, or sheep, or cow and put in feed right away it will coat their intestines and help a lot.
