Okay, have a laugh at this newbie, but I am on day 16 with 100 coturnix. I came home a little while ago to look for pips, of which I found several. I also found an exploded egg. Bummer, until I saw a chick hop out from under the fan in the center of the glass! Okay, have your laugh.

Anyway, I have enough pips that if they all hatch, I will be looking at a pretty good percentage. I will let you know. Conditions are perfect. 99F and 70%.

None of the others have started zipping yet. How long should I leave the first one in there to wait on the others. I've seen mixed reviews on that topic. He's only been out a short while because he's still wet.

Thanks,

I would leave him till the others are mostly dry. He doesn't need food or water yet and has heat so he's fine just hanging out in there and you keep heat and humidity stable that way. Play it by ear with the others. If they all come out soon let them all dry. If they don't around 8-12 hours think about removing him.

I am up to six now. Five more zipped before I could turn around. Seems to be a lull in the action now. This feels like the pause between contractions with my five kids. haha. I will leave them all for another few hours at least. Play it by ear, as you said.

Thanks,

Once Dry Remove Them. Do Not Wait For Others To Dry Out--- When The Lil Guy Is Fuzzy It Goes To The Brooder (or It Gets The Hose Again...lol) Seriously Tho, Do Not Wait Til "all Are Mostly Dry" Coturnix Hatches Will Often Drag Out Over A Couple Of Days--- The Early Birds Will Not Tolerate Delays In Food Or Water. Open The Bator Far Enough To Snatch The Lil Fuzzballz Quickly And Close It Immediately Once Your Objective Is In Hand. If You Want To Wait A Lil While For Several To Dry Out And Take Them All At Once Thats Ok, But Not More Than Dry + 2 Hrs. Once A Hatch Is Underway There Is Usually A Humidity Spike From The Hatchers Drying Out--- Dont Worry About Humidity It Will Take Care Of Itself At This Point. Getting Jr To The Brooder With Food And Water Should Now Take Priority. These Lil Guys Do Not Have Anywhere Near The Reserves Chicken Babies Do And Their Metabolism Is About 2 To 3x's Faster Than Chickens. They Need Nourishment Much Sooner Or They Will Weaken And Die From Complications.

Fyi--- Helpful Tip On Feeding The Lil Buggers--- A Nice Shiney Dime On Top Of The Food Helps Attract Babie's Attention

That And Having The Food Under Your Brooder Heat Source If You Dont Mind Them Sleeping In The Food Dish... Never Ever Ever Put Heat Source Over Or Near Water Fonts!!! These Lil Guys Are Like Heat Seeking Missiles--- They Will Find The Most Toasty Spot In The Brooder--- If Your Water Source Is It Your Losses To Drowning Will Be Very High. Don't Worry They Will Move Out Of The Hot Zone When Thirsty And Come To The Water For A Drink.

Congrats On The New Additions

Up to about 50. Those still in the bator hatched within the last half hour, so I think I can catch a few winks until early morning. So far no casualties. Looking good. Either I got some good eggs, or I'm a quail hatching genius! haha. I am sure it was the eggs and some beginner's luck. Plus, I better not count my chicks before or after they hatch. It is early yet.
