I am so excited to share that two of my four 20-week old pullets (hens now?) squatted when I went to pet them yesterday evening. They are the two lowest in the pecking order - a Silver-Laced Wyandotte and an Easter Egger. I am excitedly awaiting eggs and can't wait to see who lays first. Is egg-laying imminent once they start the squatting behavior? Do all hens/pullets squat to signal maturity? Now I'll be watching for squatting in my other two girls and eggs! Hopefully, my Barred Plymouth Rock and Buff Orpington (queen of the flock) will "get with the program" soon. I still don't know what my hubby and I are going to do with potentially 4 eggs a day, but I'll worry about that problem when I start getting those lovely gifts!

Yes, the "submissive squat" is a clear sign they'll start laying any day...let us know when you get your first one!!

Success! Our Easter Egger was acting strangely today after I got home from work and went outside to give the girls some pans of water to stand in and cool off. It was around 105 degrees today. We left for dinner and when we got home she had laid a small green egg in the water pan! Strange timing and strange place. I see that she (or another gal) has been rearranging the nesting box filling, but maybe it was too hot. I added a box of straw in the run to see what happens tomorrow. Hopefully, my SLW will lay in a day or two.
