When will my hens start laying?

I have 2 Turkey hens, a mother and A daughter, and my new Tom. Both hens started squatting about a month ago, but there have been no eggs yet. Both have bred. The mother, who started laying in February last year, was Bred on the 12th of march. And the other on the 10th. Both have stopped squatting.

I’m more worried that I have caused an issue by letting them breed this early, before they’d normally start laying. This Tom wasn’t cheap and now I’m worried I’ve wasted a breeding season of him. My main question, that I can’t find an answer to anywhere, is how long do the hens carry the fertilization without laying? I’m fine with them just starting once they are ready, but my anxiety is that they wouldn’t be fertilized by the time they start.

I feel like a lot of this is just my anxiety, and this may be a stupid question, but asking makes me feel less stressed. Please & Thank You.

Once bred successfully the hens can lay fertile eggs for up to 6 weeks. Once they have gone broody and stopped laying, they will need to breed again before laying more fertile eggs.

Just because you are not seeing them breed does not mean they have stopped breeding. I rarely see my turkeys breed but when they do start laying their eggs are fertile.

Thank you so much! I can stop being anxious now. But I do know atleast the mother isn’t breeding, as she is human imprinted and has to be tricked lol
