I've Had It!! Killing Roosters When I Get Home

You guys are too nice

- I live just west of Olympia, towards Aberdeen, I just couldn't bring myself to live in the city!

I think the testosterone kicks in about 6-8 months, but mine didn't get aggressive until they were almost a year old. I guess it took time to build up the blood supply.

You may not notice who's dominate, unless they have a group of hens to pester. Then you'll find out. The dominant roo will be the one who mates most often, sometimes the only one to mate - he may not allow the other roos a chance.

Mine don't fight amongst themselves, some do....

BTW, I love Dripping Springs - such a beautiful place

Are you from Dripping? or Austin area?? I love it here too!! It's getting hot...though. My garden is getting very very thirsty as the chickens are too. What parts do you live now?
Thank you for the heads up on my cockerels. I went to TSC and bought 6 chicks and 4 of them are cockerels so I have 1 prod red and 1 cornish rock (her time might be limited). So I need to figure something out before the testosterone kicks in. I'm hoping they will get along, only two are kinda sparing but no damage. Guess I will just have to seperate them as time goes along and hope for the best. My husband keeps telling me he has BBQ sauce and the grill is ready to go...lol!!

Don't have the pics. , but I made a nice four bay rooster pad for $130.

It is rectangular in shape, four feet high and the individual pens are six by six. The total area is 6 x 24 and totally covered with recycled metal from the local scrap yard. The framing is #2 grade 2"x4"x8' long, $2 each from lowe's.

The best part is the gates. One $20 cattle panel cut into 4- 4foot sections and covered in chicken wire. For hinges, I bought a $3 box of two inch post staples,(#4sizewire) It is fenced with 2"x3" dog wire, covered with chicken wire cloth. It took me about six hours to construct it. I used landscape timbers for corner posts, and painted the bottom, that's in the ground, with roofing tar to keep bugs out.

The largest expense was the dog wire, only because I bought the 100 ft. roll for $60. It was less expensive that way, even though I had 40 feet left over. I did use that for a rabbit enclosure. LOL

I'm from North Central TX, but TX Hill Country is the most beautiful place, IMHO... I live in western Washington, near the Pacific - horrible weather... I understand why they have the highest suicide rate in the country.... I think I'm going to have to warm up my grill before long ;)

Really? Where did you find that rule written & by who?
Introduce a hen that's been seperated back into a flock with too many males & the behavior you described will be repeated every time. Each male hopes to claim the female for his own flock. Nature at work.
Butcher or otherwise remove your excess males? absolutely, you have too many. Ascribing human qualities to animals is known as anthropomorphising & it's irrational.

Lol, I was looking at my old posts and after I read this I immediately thought of Sheldon on "The Big Bang Theory".

Wow....I would say some of the rooster have to go. The "floggers" and "bangers"! Seems that probably two roosters should cover the number of hens you have. With that many hens, the momma hen should be left alone with the two roosters trying to cover their duties elsewhere.

I caught my two roosters fighting in the bachelor pad yesterday afternoon. I split them up and hoped the night would cool them off. This morning they were at it again. Blood in their water trough, and running down their heads. So I took one and put him in a separate pen for the day. I have loaded photos of him on Gumtree to give away. I've got a taker. So I hope he goes to a good home soon. How would I clean him up? I though of bathing him in warm salty water. Has any one got any ideas?
