I've heard of broody hens, but a broody ROO???

That was a very sweet comment. Thank you!

I have an OEGB that thinks he is mama. My hen hatched out 4 chicks and one died early on. Well the others are a week old now. But one day a few days after they were hatched, I go out to check on them. They are in a tall coop/tractor that I can see into from the front. So I look in and I don't see mom or the chicks, just the roo. Well my heart sank. I just figured something had managed to get them. I looked up to the roost and there sat mom, so I go to open the door to go in and check to see about the chicks. When I opened the door, protective roo that he is, he stood up and all three babies came out from under him. He walks around with them under his wings more than mom. He is a little too aggressive to humans for my taste but he is very protective. I just moved the babies into the brooder so that I can hand raise them and not have them be aggressive. The roo and hen were older when I got them and do not like to be handled. They will be rehomed soon, to a guy that has raised OEGB's and is use to the temperment and does not mind. All the OEGB babies will go with them and be re-introduced at a later time. But he is a great dad and I guess part time mom too. Very sweet indeed.

I was told that Barndevelders roos will help brood chicks giving the hen a break. I don't have any of those birds but it sounded cool.

yes, roos will do funny things at times. this past feb. I had a hen that went broody. Her nest was outside and it snowed, when I went to feed in the morning, I found all five hens and the roo piled up trying to keep the eggs warm. only one egg hacthed. but the roo looks after that chick.
