I've read the latest sand reports; what about you wood pellet users?

I use the pellets in the cat boxes and in the chick brooder, but like sand better for the coop. The thing that is so great about sand is that it's easy to "scoop" the poo and when used along with a poop board under the roost has pretty much eliminated the need for full scale coop clean outs.

Another big plus with using sand is that it's much easier to compost the poo to use in the garden. It's really not like having to buy two different products though because once you get the sand in place it's pretty much done. I add a bag of stall-dri now and again and eventually I'll probably have to add somemore sand, but it's not a regular thing like it is with shavings or pellets.

I'm new to chickens, and will get some soon. I had ring neck pheasants for 2 years, and kept them in a 10 x 6 x 6 dog run, and what a mess they made after all the grass was gone. . After reading alot of posts, I'm going to use sand in the coop, and a poop pan under roost. Are you using sand in the run also. Thanks
