I have a yearling peacock (Wolfgang) who has developed a mite problem on his neck. I have sprayed him several times with Manna Poultry Protector with no improvement. Catching him for spraying has been very stressful for him...and for me. Is there something I can put in his water that will help get rid of the mites? I read that Ivermectin for horses, 1% injectible can be used orally. Does that mean I can put it in his water? If so at what dosage? I am a bit nervous about this since I have had no experience with Ivermectin. Any suggestions?

Ivermectin is not water soluble, so it should be given orally, or topically on the skin. Will he eat a wet mash? If so, you could put the ivermectin in a mash for him.
Do you put injectible Ivermec on topically? You might mention how much of the injectable you would put in a treat or mash for the bird.

I have given the 1% ivermectin orally for lice most tmes, but once I gave it topically just to see if it would work and it did.

I always give ivermectin based on weight at 0.1 ml per kilogram. @old biddy, I just weighed some of my yearling boys and all were about 4 kilograms, so if I were going to use the 1% ivermectin on them, I would give them 0.4 ml each.

When you gave it topically, did you just rub some on the neck full strength? Will it irritate his skin? (He has lost some of his neck feathers so the skin is bare.)

I put it on his back on the skin. The ivermectin does not need to touch the bugs, it works by being absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream.

Oh, that is good to know. And I am assuming it is applied full strength? Just a dab?
Do you have a 1 ml or 3 ml syringe? He needs 0.4 ml directly from the bottle (not diluted).

This is a 1 ml syringe. See the 0.4 ml on the right?

This is a 3 ml syringe. Fill to the 0.4 ml mark just before the 1/2 mark.
