Hi I took my dog to the vet cuz her weight and the vet gave me a dog food that I can only get at gets who sell it and before I start getting it for her is it a good food to use it is a weight loss food called ivet as any one else used it how did your dog do on it thanks

I just did a quick google search and found the ingredients for the “large breed adult” formula. In my personal opinion, that food would never be served to my dogs for a few reasons. It includes chicken, a protein that can cause severe allergies in many dogs. It has rice and many other grains, dogs are CARNIVORES. Yes, they can eat fruits and vegetables but would eventually die of that’s all they could eat because dogs can’t digest fruits and veggies. And finally I cannot stand companies(vets and dog food producers) that peddle these “veterinarian prescribed” foods. It’s just a gimmick, get your dog on a solid food such as Acana, Origen, or Victor. They are more expensive per bag but the dog eats less of that food because it is all protein that the dog can digest. To help a dog lose weight it usually(unless there are more extensive problems) just needs less food and more exercise. Good luck!!

Best tool to help your dog lose weight is a measuring cup. No need to spend any extra money on expensive food, just feed less of what you are now feeding. Measure how much you are feeding now, and cut that back by increments until you reach the point that he is actually losing. Cut the treats down by 3/4ths, and gradually increase exercise. Weigh your dog every week. Some of the major pet stores have scales, or you can take him back to the vet's office. They shouldn't charge you just to weigh him.

There is a lot of nonsense about dog foods out there, and if most of it were true, my dogs would have been dead long ago. Dogs are carnivores, but they are not obligatory carnivores like a cat is. They can and do digest foods other than meat. The Irish used to raise fine dogs on a diet primarily of milk and potatoes, because that is what they had an abundance of. I feed mine Purina One, chicken and rice dog food. It meets my requirements for a dog food. One, meat, or in this case chicken, is the first ingredient. Two, it is readily available. Three, the dogs like it. Four, the dogs do well on it. There is a minimum of itching, their coats are shiny, they maintain a healthy weight, and their stools are firm and virtually odorless. This last means they are digesting it well. The dog food manufacturers are not out to poison your dogs. There are a lot of good dog foods available. Just stay away from the cheap supermarket brands. If the droppings are loose and smelly, you need to feed something else.

There is no magic potion to get the weight off your dog any more than there is one for people. You need to decrease calories going in and increase the number of calories burned through sensible exercise.

Bottom line is do you trust your vet ? Chicken and grains has become the enemy in the last few years , it’s not bad for your dog . The high protein foods like listed above ( acana, blue buffalo) those are the ones hurting dogs , they are so far removed from “ wolves “ it’s just a crazy craze!!

Trust your vet ,my pup with bladder stones has avoided surgery because of her ivet diet.

( I’m not a vet but I trust mine and my doctors too)

No, they are omnivores.
They have a range of nutrient needs that cannot be met from meat alone.
Chicken can cause allergies but it doesn't always.

That said, the company website doesn't say where they are sourcing their ingredients or what their quality control is like.
They also only use "whole ingredients" and no by-products which means they are contributing to the massive ecological footprint that the trendy "whole food for pet" movement is causing. http://theconversation.com/a-big-pawprint-the-environmental-impact-of-pet-food-74004
IMO, if you want your pet to eat whole food, source it yourself locally and use a veterinary grade recipe to ensure it is nutrient balanced like from balanceit.com or a veterinary nutritionist.
