Ivomec Pour-On?? Frontline Spray??

If you believe what's in the parasite pedia link, it's not very safe in chickens, but I think chicken people use it. Of course I'd have to know the concentration of the spray and/or the spot on.

Having trouble with the parasite pedia page loading, doesn't like my blockers. I had found some other references a few days ago, maybe I can dig again this weekend. Found spray being marketed for chickens on one website. Found EPA pages on fipronil, etc.

The *oral* LD 50 chicken dose is about 12 mg/kg, dogs, cats and cattle are much higher.

I need some help with what i think might be mites...we bought a peahen at auction and long story short i think she has mites but I've never dealt with them so I'm not sure...i felt gritty stuff up under her feathers on her breast bone...it was dark and we had a flashlight but it looked like light brownish colored stuff, dry and gritty...our dirt where she would dust bathe us like fine sand, plus thus6 gritty stuff didnt disintegrate between my fingers like a tiny dirt chunk would. ..there is no outward signs of anything going on with her, just what i felt with my hands under her feathers. Should i treat with the meds mentioned above? She hasn't mingled too close with my other peafowl yet because she's still the new girl but should i treat the others as well even though they may not show outward signs? I won't be able to catch the other peafowl because they free range and roost in high trees but they do take treats like grapes as part of a daily routine so i could dose the grapes or some other food....any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks

Even though there are millions of different types of mites and most of them haven't even been named it is rare that we hear of mites on peafowl as causing problems. Most likely lice are the problem 'if' you have anything on your bird.

First a slight chastizing on buying birds at auction. Good, that's over. I have bought birds at auction too and brought home al kinds of problems. In the future you might want to find good breeders of peafowl and buy from them instead of getting culls at an auction.

There are three kinds of lice I can think of on peas, (birds in general), the ear lice, body lice, and feather lice.

Here are ear lice drinking from the eye.


Body lice look like these but are a larger and easier to see.

We use Ivermec pour on and give one ml per bird topically. A couple of drops on the back of the head for the ear lice, half between the shoulders on the skin, and the rest above the vent, gain on the skin.

Did a thorough check on her this morning in the daylight and it's just dirt lol...i was paranoid it was something bad...thanks for the info i will keep it on hand in case anything develops in the future...

Lol, I never saw the lice on my bird, ever, until I was taking a close up photo of an eye injury and had the eye magnified on my cell phone screen. Then, as I was sitting there looking at the eye and trying to get a good photo, I started seeing the nasty little things crawling across the edge of the eyelid to drink.

Then I was totally freaked out and my skin started crawling.

I would never have seen them if it weren't for the magnification thru the cell phone camera.

I'm no longer confident in my ability to distinguish dirt from creepy critters without magnification -- but then, my eyes are getting old

I know in dogs, ear mites often look just like dirt. Apparently the peas' eyes are good enough to see the individual lice, as they pick them off each other while grooming. I've come around to the opinion that a periodic external parasite treatment might be good preventative medicine.

I think the parasite load might have to be fairly high to cause noticeable harm, but I think I'd rather just be sure they aren't there.

Now, I know it looks REALLY obvious in the photos, but honestly, even with the eye injury on the bird, I did NOT see that gross creepy crawly until I was taking the photos. Yecckkk

Has anyone noticed a correlation between the ear mites that drink from the eye and eye problems? I always seem to notice them especially on eye problem birds and am beginning to wonder why this is? Do they actually damage the eyes per problems in the ear canal? I mean other than general irritation. Just things that are making me go Hmmm.

Well, this bird was being treated for a ruptured eye caused by (I believe) another bird pecking it in the eye.

Now there is definitely a possibility that those darned lice are the original cause of the peck injury... if the other bird is pecking to pick off the lice and the licey bird moves at the wrong instant...

And then I wonder if they carry bacteria around.... I dunno. The thing is just gross.
