Do Jack Russel Terriers get along well with Chickens? Why or why not?

I have had JTR's for the past 15 years and from experience I can tell you that most love killing poultry. Mine and those of many others that I know cannot be trusted not to kill. I have just recently be able to allow my 15 year old female out in the yard at the same time as the chickens, and that is only with my direct supervision. Killing is was JTRs were breed for and don't let anyone try to convence you different. Great dogs though.

It has been my experience that a JR and a Daushaund are the worst to keep around animals. My MIL had one put to sleep because he would kill everything that hit the ground. She had another one put to sleep because he was LOCO and had serious neurological problems and would try to attack himself and everyone else.

I am sure there is a sweet little JR somewhere but I haven't seen one yet.

I have a JR and have raised others before, they are bred to hunt and it is natural to them. My eight year old boy has never been taken or trained to hunt but let something come into his area not dog and he is all over it. Sorry

JTRs are extremely smart, affectionate dogs but they require constant supervision and you must accept that you are not going to change their nature.

I agree. I don't own one, but I am loved by one that belongs to a dear friend. I know he would be on a chicken in a heartbeat.

We have owned many a loveable JRT...they are one of our favorite breeds.

They LOVE chickens, but not to snuggle with haha. We never could break ours of doing all they could to munch on the escapees from the coop. You could be right on their tails as they chased the poor doomed poultry and they would care less about your admonishions to cease and desist.

Our Aussie, though...he's a GEM. He'll herd them back into the coop when they escape...and even when he's panting hard, he will close his mouth and gently push them to go the direction he desires. No matter how frazzled the chicken becomes, he never gets too excited to forget to be gentle.

I have two Jack Russels. my oldest killed one of my chicks within the first month I got them. My newest Jack Russel loves the chickens. One day I left for work and i guess I forgot to close the door to where to the brooder when I came home he was in the brooder licking the chicks like a lolly pop all we fine but he thinks he is there momma. I was really surprise in the two different attitudes.

The one I know, Angus, is not good with any creature that might run from it. That dang prey drive.
I suppose if they were raised from a puppy with one it might be a different story.
