January Hatch Buddies?

I have eggs from my flock for the first time I am hatching. My roosters just came to age

I have a due date of january ninth, and I could have a huge mix of what might come out. I could have silkie - silkie, silke - RIR, silkie - white leghorn, silkie - turken. I could also have RIR - RIR, RIR - silkie, RIR - White leghorn, RIR - Turken, and I have a few polish roosters roaming around in there but I am not sure if they are old enough yet. It will be fun to watch them hatch!

I set the eggs at 1:40 am

I had fallen asleep putting my two year old to bed so I rushed to the bator when I woke up. Hubby was laughing at me since I'm normally pretty serious. He said he has not seen me excited over something that much in a long time. I guess in truth it is more for me than the boys... or at least equally for all of us haha

I was wondering is it best to candle or not? I'm afraid I will compromise the hatch too much if I open the bator.. but I don't want eggs to bust either... What are your thoughts? If I do, when should it be done? Could I get away with doing it on day 14 and 18 only?

Edit:

I put 22 americauna/EE eggs in the bator, on my auto turner (which I am so glad I bought). I used a pair of surgical gloves when I handled the eggs to put them in. I did notice the temp was low for a couple of hours after I put them in. That is why I was wondering about opening the bator for candling.

I am sooooo happy with my hovabator and auto turner. I figured it up and my eggs go into lockdown on the 10th of January, and are due to hatch on the 13th. Anyone's hatch due around the same time?? How are all of your incubators holding up so far?

OMG I'm addicted to BYC... lol log on here everyday after work.

My 3 eggs are now all under the hen. I started out with 8. She is too small for so many, so I had four under her and four in a homemade incubator. Only three are viable. This is our first hatch, due Monday, January 3rd. I am crossing everything that they all come out all right.

I candled mine every three or four days, when I turned and added water. I know you don't need to do that, but I figured if I was in there anyway, it wouldn't hurt. And the hen is off the nest for about 15 minutes every day, which was when I'd candle her eggs.

Wish us luck!!! The same to you!

Jenny

Yup. After that first hatchling breaks its way out of the shell and then fluffs up into a running, cheeping chick, I was hooked. To think a life came from something I just as easily could have cracked open and scrambled for breakfast 21 days earlier - oh WOW.

And when you hear peeping from a solid, unbroken egg, it's SO precious! Then the pip. Then the zipping..... and crouching by the 'bator cheering it on!
