January Hatch Buddies?

You should go ahead and set the incubator up and let it run for a few days to make sure it is holding temps and humidity.

Also, you could put some regular store bought eggs in there for a couple of days and see how it preforms with a load of eggs in it.

This dry test will help you feel better about waiting AND you will feel better knowing that everything will go well when you get the eggs

You are so right, and I want to do that too. What should I disinfect the bator with afterwards? I don't have any of the Brinsea rinse they talk about in the manuel.....

Now my biggest concern is where to put the thing!!! I have a couple options.....

1. My bedroom. Pros: It's the least travelled part of the house. It's away from the kids and the critters. Cons: It can get cold in there sometimes when the temps drop at night. Hubby is a light sleeper and fan noise might tick him off!

2. The kitchen counter beside the fridge (not the stove.) Pros: It's a lot more stable temperature wise. We would all be able to see and enjoy it. Cons: It's in a higher traffic area, and might be accidentally bumped by a curious kitty. (Kids are old enough to know that they would take thier life in thier hands if they looked at it crossways.)

3. My closet. Pros: Definitely would be quiet and out of the way of drafts! Cons: I don't have anything completely flat to set it on, and the directions say that's important to make an air "seal" under the bator.

Which should I do?

If it were me I would pick the kitchen because of stable temps and involving the family. That is what I looked for when choosing my spot which is beside a built in bookcase next to DH's computer... but that's just my 2cents worth lol

Sounds like we are adding more hatchoholics to our cause. mwhaahaahaa!

I have 22 silkie eggs due to hatch tomorrow. 1 has already hatched early and 4 more are pipped!

Hoping my first broody will hatch the eggs from her hen pals on New Years Day! 6 eggs, cadled Christmas Eve - all looking good!

Forgot to mention my little broody silkie hatched her lone egg last night. I tried to move her and chick to my mommy and me pen and she wouldn't have anything to do with it! So he went in the brooder and she went back to her empty nest......

Congrats on the new babies daze!

Mountain, I decided on the kitchen for the spot so the kids could see too. It's a pretty protected area with a wall on two sides and cabinets overhead. The only issue might be the dumb cat, but generally he just likes to watch and so far has ignored the plugged in unit. If he shows too much interest I can rig up a screen around it. Besides, he's got the babies in the brooder to drool over for now.

(Our other kitty is a good girl and ignores everything.....funny, she's an AWESOME mouser, but seems to know the chicks are off limits.)

I'm playing with the settings on the bator, but it seems to be a good one for sure. When I take the lid off and put it back on, it only takes about 30 seconds to get back up to temp. And it holds steady within .2 degrees every time I've checked it. I still have to get and calibrate my hydrometer, but I'm getting REALLY impatient waiting on eggs! Hahaha!

I'm not planning on candleing until about day 10 if I can keep my hands off of them that long. I'm also only going to use an LED flashlight and a piece of cardboard with a hole in it instead of a "ready made" candler. DO you think that would work?

Well heres a pic of my first homemade incubator and my eggs. I still have to change the kind of wire I have in there. Also, I put too big of a window in it, and it made my tepms too low, so had to go back and put styrofoam over some of my window. I also covered my whole operation with a Cardboard box. It has made a world of difference, and my bator has stayed draft free ever since!

I got a Genesis 1588 - I haven't ever hatched anything in it yet, but I'm saving Button eggs to incubate, I'll be sticking them in Friday evening. Can I still join?

Tuper-I use a small LED flashlight for my candling of white, cream and light brown eggs. The medium browns and darks like marans take my makita flashlight, but I have to be quick, that light gets hot. Day 5 is really good to do light eggs on. They are certainly big enough to see and I think that is the day they start moving. Good luck!
