I've had this little Japanese Bantam hen (?) for about 2 months and about a month ago also bought a pair so she has some company closer in size to her than the rest of our mixed flock. Just recently, I've heard crowing even when my little roo is still locked up in the mornings. I sat and watched her for a good 20minutes one day and lo and behold she crows! Not often and it's certainly not very refined but it's a definate crow. She also has a bit of a peck at my roo everyday when I put him in with the girls in the morning. Seems like very male behaviour but at the same time i'm convinced she's a girl cause there are no signs of her being a male other than the crowing.

Please tell me that I have a freak of nature Hen who likes to crow occassionally and not a roo who will crow everyday?? I dont want to get rid of her

Also, any hints on how old she is? She has grown heaps since I bought her but I havent had an egg yet (hopefully not cause she's a he!).

This is the one in question, Ebony:

I'm not even going to guess at what I think it is...still too new to all of this. Just wanted to post and tell you that those are some very pretty birds!!

Thanks guys, appreciate the opinions and also the compliments on my little banty family! They were a mess when I bought them so I'm quite proud of how they've all turned out!

cheers
