Japanese Beetles

Starting to get damage on my damson tree here in VA. Just now researching about how to rig a trap for chicken yum yums!

These are not outright traps. Beetles are attracted into range of chickens which eat them immediately. The nutritional value is better when they are caught as coming in.

Most recent approach where much smaller chicks are being fed.

Say what?
When I was googling something to the effect of “Japanese beetle trap for chickens”, posts for Backyard Chickens was one of the top choices (or first “page” results), and some of those were yours! It seems like you are studying them - is it a formal study or personal study?

I'd be interested to see what you came up with.

I set something up today:

We’ll see how it goes. Preloaded water bowl with some beetles from the damson tree! Beetles flying around in like a minute or two of opening the pheromone thingie. Poor chickens only half-heartedly are them because they were really hot.🥵 Now it’s late evening and the spot I hung the bag up is in the shade and there isn’t a beetle to be seen.
The set up ended up being one of the provided bags cut just below the pinched in part. I found some sort of plumbing thing for a tube, a “flexible tailpiece extension”, as there wasn’t too many options late after work locally last night. But it seems to work - put the screw threads on the inside of the cut part and put the uhh, washer? Part on the outside and screwed it together. We’ll see. Worst case the lure will bring the beetles to the run and they can chase them themselves 😁

That's resourceful! Any update on how it's working, better or are the beetles still just being chased? Have they figured out the can pick them out of the water yet?

I am in Rising Sun MD and the beetles in my yard are in the 100's right now. I had heard that chickens love to eat them so I catch them in a jar early morning or evening when they are not active and dump them in the run. The chickens gobble them up. Early morning or evening the beetles are sort of doormat and don't fly away. I have a huge yard of flowers and plants that they are attracted to and I have tried many ways to get rid of them. Their favorites are roses and the blackberry bushes but as the summer progresses they move on to Hibiscus and others. Milky pore seems to work the best but it doesn't last very long.
