I just got five baby Java chicks. My friend said they are rather rare, what would the reason be? How many people have them?
Mine are all black. Have they been mixed with other breeds? Just wondered,as I am thinking of keeping them separate and pure.

Looks like quite a few people are starting to aquire Java`s. About 7-8 years ago I read an article in Mother Earth News about The Garfield Farm Museum, in IL. Seems they obtained some Black Java`s and though they were considered rare, or even extinct, at that time, the University of IL did a DNA test on them and determined that they were indeed pure Black Java`s. Garfield started breeding them pure and had some white sports hatch. So then they bred both the blacks and the whites seperately. I obtained some eggs and hatched several and started both families on my own. Before long I had Java`s of both colors comming out my ears. I gave all my stock to a breeder in Loxahatchee, FL, so as to make room for my true love, which is Oriental Gamefowl. It is my understanding that spangled and even blue colors have since been devloped. If you google Garfield Farm Museum, you will find a lot of info on Java`s. Have fun..........Pop

I have White Java roos(6-8 weeks) for sale from Garfield Farm, if you would like to get some White blood in your Blacks, they are $5 and shipping is $45 for 1. White Javas are extremely rare and I would say their are around 100 of them.

Javas are rare, but hatcheries are starting to carry the mottled Javas as well (haven't seen a black or white from a hatchery yet, but then again, I didn't look to hard). From a breeder, they are gems!

there are a few of us on here who are working with javas. it's exciting to see others taking it up too! i do a search on javas every once in a while just to get an idea of who "we" java folks are. good luck!
