what do you think of the birds? by that i mean, what should i work on (as i selectively breed) that just jumps out at you? what looks good, what needs work?

i want to do this right. i am reading everything i an get my hands on but there is not a lot of info on javas and most of it repeats what everything else you can find says. what i want more of is people who are actually breeding and savvy about the genetics of the breed, so i can learn more as i go.

if you have any questions about something you see, holler! i do have to say that the hens' tailfeathers are a bit ruffled looking--they were quarantined for a while and were a little cramped. and the white on the tail feathers is DE...i was sprinkling and got some on some rainy hens. my girls are pure black other than the DE powder.

I'm not an expert, but I do have Java's. Things thatI noticed. Very high tail sets on hens, and floppy combs. I would suggest joining the Java yahoo group and asking them for advice. They have a ton of knowledge. I did have pics of the old time Java standard, but cannot find them at the momment.

one of my girls does have a floppy comb but the two others do not (there are probably multiple pics of moxie, the hen with a floppy comb, as she is the least skittish and i could get close...so that may have been confusing). however, she lays an enormous egg and is the biggest and calmest. so, i need to try to breed those babies of hers that have a lower tail set, more upright comb, but that retain her temperament, large size and her large egg size.

i will join the yahoo group--thank you!
