I currently have 3 broody hens sitting in a total of 4 nests, which means I need to check for eggs pretty frequently to avoid the broody hens getting any new eggs.
Today, when I gathered the eggs, I saw my golden sex link hen squatting over the nest, and when I picked up the egg, it was still kind of moist/sticky. I like getting warm eggs, but that was a new experience.
I went in and showed my mother the egg, and she gave me a slightly grossed out face, as I told her what happened, and that "I don't think I'll ever gather an egg fresher than that!"
... Turns out, hens get jealous just like people do. The next time I checked on the birds, I saw one of my two easter egger hens squatting on the nest, and a moist egg below her... She didn't like the idea of being upstaged by my sex link, and had to prove me wrong.
The one great thing about what happened, besides the hen wars, was that I had been trying to figure out who had been laying the brown egg in my flock, and I finally got to see the brown egg being laid, so I don't have to wonder anymore!
Yeah... that was my day... I'll just sit here, and wait for hatching day!
Maybe after the eggs hatch, my hens won't fight over the nests so much... Unless another hen goes broody... 11 of my hens are breeds that are known to go broody, so I guess it could be fun, right?
