I have multiple hobbies and interests. Hunting and fishing are my main interests. I also turn my own lures, along with other woodworking ( bird house, feeders, lawn ornaments, ect. I also do all my own work around the house and fix everything from the car to the sewing machine and nearly everything in between. I do constructionfrom the top to the bottom. Career wise I have 29 years (and counting) in the Air Force and Wisconsin Air National Guard as an aircraft mechanic. I'm looking forward to retirement in the next few years so my hobbies will become my full time work!

Thats great! We need more people like that. And you are one of the people that will NOT get bored being retired. I've been retired for going on 3 years and having a blast. Poor as a church mouse and not caring at all. My woodworking/handywoman/chicken raising/smithing/gardening/sewing/computer gaming/what have you keep me very busy!

Hey spotstealer, welcome to BYC! I know where there is a BIG ol hunk o' walnut, has been aged about 10 years now, aside a road where it was cut down and left. It seems to be where the tree bifurcated. (split, lol) and I am thinking it would make some killer stuff, like a huge ol' bowl or something. What would be the best way to make the most use of that chunk of wood? I hate to waste it by burning/hacking out a lot of good wood to just make one huge bowl. Probably weighs a couple hundred pounds.

I would most likely resaw it on the bandsaw into boards if I could, that's what happens to most of my found wood since I'm not really much of a wood turner. But if you did that, then you could still save chunks of it for smaller turned objects. As for getting it into pieces small enough to cut on the bandsaw, if it's huge, only a chainsaw comes to mind even though that wastes wood. It's just so hard to split that stuff even with the right wedges.
