I want to raise some Jersey giants, I'm wondering how difficult that would be and how they would do with other animals, dogs, cats, other chickens? Any advice or suggestions would be helpful. Thank you. P.s. and how well would they free range?

I've never raised Jerseys, but from what I know of them, they are extremely docile, friendly birds. They are popular show birds even for small children because they are so easy to handle. They do well with other breeds. Dogs and cats, like with any breed, depend on how well behaved the dog and cat are. As I've stated, I haven't had them, but I doubt they'd do well free-range, at least in the predator department. Big, docile birds often either aren't alert enough or fast enough to escape a predator. The best free rangers are small, fast, and usually not good pets as they are highly suspicious of everyone and everything.

Thank you for the info, I will consider all of it as i make a decision.

Hi,
I have one JG she is very friendly. Never the trouble maker and is currently playing mom co parenting with my Lavender Orp. Excellent mother. She is my favorite of the flock.

We have male and female JG. Docile, overall. The males are very large, which is interesting. They have been good flock leaders. The females are only ok layers. They are not high production at all. Eggs are large to extra large.

I have raised Jersey Giants. They are friendly and the males have a nice deep crow. They make good pets if you like large chickens.

They take two years to fully mature. During the first year, they fill out their frame, and only put on their full size in the second year. They do consume quite a bit of feed.

They're a bit more of a meat bird than a layer. Never had a JB hen go broody successfully.

This rooster was from Ideal. They are the cutest baby chicks.

Have you ever ate your Roos? If so at what age did you cull them? If it’s 2 years to reach full size I would suspect a really tough bird for the table.
