Jersey Giant/NH Red crosses - when to start on layer feed?

I understand Jersey Giants mature slowly, and it just occurred to me that perhaps I shouldn't start these birds on layer feed at 18 weeks like I typically do? Should I give them more time to mature? If so, what are your thoughts on how long? Any feedback is appreciated! Thanks.

I wait until I see an egg before sswitching over the feeds.

My Jersey Giants were among the first to lay, the same week as my RIR -- 20 weeks. I switched mine over a little early because I wanted to make a gradual transition and didn't want to be left with a full bag of grower feed. It went fine.
