Jersey Giants & Lavender Orpingtons

Are they Black Jersey Giants? I think black is one of my favorite chicken colors because of the iridescence. I think they should make a good mix and a nice cross, but I don't have direct experience doing so myself. Thanks for joining! Welcome to BackYard Chickens!

We have a small farm in Boring, Oregon. We have a mixed flock. Mostly Jersey Giants and a few Lavender Orpingtons. Has anyone ever tried to mix the 2 breeds? We are gonna try next spring.

Has anyone had any luck?

The one thing I have learned about lavender orpingtons is that they are really black, with a recessive gene that mutes the black. If you cross with lavender the recessive gene will be masked, so you will be effectively breeding black birds, at least for the first generation.

I don't know if you are aware but all the chickens from this mix will be black the first generation.

We are just diving into this whole breeding experience. Learning as we go through this winter. Then we are gonna try and put our lavender orp rooster with our jersey girls.
