mine have some lights on them helps to keep them around 35 on the perch just a couple of reg bulbs with the porceln light fixtures wired to the rafters only the cone type new bulbs that take forever to turn on bright they do get warm and enuff light to get eggs from them ive got 9 hens and im getting 7 to 9 eggs every day they are young they didnt start laying till september and havent even slowed down yet

I am 2hrs south of you, just south of Augusta.

I have a standard incandescent 60-75w bulb. Turns on at 3am and off at daylight.

Cone type lamp? Is it like a lamp for reptiles?

just the cfl bulbs i picked up at tsc they say daylight on them so they are bright and seem to be all they need for now but mine arent on a timer i just leave them on they seem to help keep the coop anout 10 deg warmer then the out side temp when they say its going to be really cold i put on a heat lamp bulb that is a red light i got that at tsc also seems like im in there all the time but its on my way home from bangor so its not out of my way at all

I'm in the process of helping to improve the buff Chantecler for recognition by the APA. I joined the group doing it for fun, and although the birds have to look like the whites and partridge, I am making sure mine are good layers with a good carcass. As part of the improvement process (to tighten the feathers) I have infused some Cornish blood. As one APA judge told me, a little Cornish blood goes a long way. the resulting birds are very heavy for their size, and grow fairly quickly. This year, I'm working with 3/4 Chantecler, and haven't lost any size. I butchered 22 roosters at the first of the year, and was impressed with their carcass quality.

I too like dual purpose breeds, and I like my Chanteclers for laying and carcass quality -- the infusion of Cornish makes a better carcass. Why not infuse some Cornish into a dual purpose breed?

Another cross I like is Buff Orpington x Ameracauna or Easter Egger. Good layers, fast growth, foragers with a decent sized bird.

I would love to caponize my Cochins -- I've read about but would love to see it done. Has anyone taught themself?

I switched gears in the middle of this message. I raise standard size blue Cochins also. I think they would make great capons.

I tried the heat lamp thing one winter, cost me a fortune. Electric bill went up quite a bit.

So I do the regular lamp for a simulated 14hr daylight effect.
The chickens actually live in a camper. The temp inside is quite a bit warmer than outside.

I was also looking at the cornish breed yesterday. Brown cornish looks interesting.
I am going to investigate further.
Maybe cross a jersey giant with a brown cornish?

I have 10 white Jersey Giants; 5 male, 5 female. I believe we will be butchering 3 males soon.

Yes they are. I am hopeful I will be able to work with some of these to build a fine flock.
