Does anyone here have any jersey cows? I’m new to cattle and got two jersey heifers (half sisters) in June. About 6 weeks or so ago I caught the younger one who is about 8 1/2 months old nursing on the older heifer who is almost 2 years old. My partner and I are are in the middle of building a house and are quite busy. It was about a week before I could do anything about the situation. To our surprise the older heifer had started to produce a small amount of milk. We now have one of those plastic weaning devices on the younger heifer so don’t think she is attempting to nurse any longer.

Tonight when I was checking on the heifers I noticed something white on one of the teats of the older heifer. When I took a closer look there is something black on two of them as well. They did not appear warmer than usual so not sure if they’re sore or not.

Anyone know what this is?

Have you already ruled out mastitis?
We haven’t ruled out anything as I just discovered this last night and am trying to find out what it is. There doesn’t appear to be any inflammation, unusual redness or heat from what I can tell.

We had her bred using AI 3 weeks ago but not sure yet if she caught.
