Jest Another Day in Pear-A-Dice - Higgins Rat Ranch Conservation Farm in Alberta

Heel low:

Sent out Volume 1 Issue 7 - May 15, 2015...

Forgot to post the revamp of the raspberry patch in Issue 6...tore her right down, one cart of roots, one cart of rotted manure added = same level of planting medium. This might stunt our raspberry harvest this year but she will be good for quite sometime in the future.

Foamy figures she gets first dibs on the harvest since she was such a good Inspector of the proceedings. Little does she know, this is the Kid's patch and we are only the caretakers--little lax at being the caretakers even.

Tara I well remember Ian & Sylvia - I think they were the ones that did a hit "Love is Strange."

Thinking of our star Xena from Aussieland you could have Xena and Gabrielle (Gabby)? or Not.

we all know XENA was a real '"ask" kicker can't remember what she named her baby in the show. Actually another really tough broad was ZIVA from NCIS

Xena & Ziva not bad.

Canadians Ian and Sylvia Tyson were a folk singing duo...marriage ended, Ian went more country.

Ian, Sylvia and Emmylou Harris did some kewl songs together...

Ian lives in Alberta, he is 81. Rick has seen him play, we have both been to the Ranchman's in Calgary (MC horses).

Summer Wages

www.youtube.com/watch?v=65CL9NrlL5I
Ian, Sylvia and Emmylou...

Never hit seventeen
When you play against the dealer
You know that the odds
Won't ride with you
Never leave your woman alone
With your friends around to steal her
She'll be gambled and gone
Like summer wages

And we'll keep rollin on
Till we get to Vancouver
And the lady that I love
She's living there
Its been six long months
And more since I've seen her
Maybe she's gambled and gone
Like summer wages

(Chorus)
In all the beer parlors
All down along Main Steet
The dreams of the season
Are spilled down on the floor
All the big stands of timber

Wait there just for fallin'
The hookers stand watchfully
Waitin by the door

I'm going to work on them towboats
With my slippery city shoes
Lord I swore I would never do that again
Through the great fog bound straights
Where the cedars stand waitin
I'll be lost and gone
Like summer wages
(Break - fiddle same as verse)

(Chorus)
Never hit seventeen
When you play against the dealer
You know that the odds
Won't ride with you
Never leave your woman alone
With your friends around to steal her
She'll be gambled and gone
Like summer wages
And the years are gambled and lost
Like summer wages

Navaho Rug
www.youtube.com/watch?v=oX23Ejqwu0g

Well it's two eggs up on whiskey toast
And home fries on the side
Wash it down with the road house coffee
Burns up your insides
Just a Canyon-Colorado Diner
And a waitress I did love
I sat in the back neath an old stuffed bear
And a worn out Navajo rug

Well Old Jack, the boss, he left at six
And it's Katie bar the door
She'd pull down that Navajo rug
And she'd spread it across the floor
Hey, I saw lightning cross the sacred mountains
Saw woven turtle doves
I was sittin' next to Katie
On that old Navajo rug

[Chorus:]
Aye, Aye, Aye, Katie
Shades of red and blue
Aye, Aye, Aye, Katie
Whatever became of the Navajo rug and you
Katie, shades of red and blue

Well I saw old Jack about a year ago
He said the place burned to the ground
And all I saved was this old bear tooth
And Katie, she's left town
Oh, but Katie, she got her souvenir too
Jack spat a tobacco plug
Well you should have seen her a-coming through the smoke
Draggin' that Navajo rug

[Chorus]

So every time I cross the sacred mountains
And lightning breaks above
It always takes me back in time
To my long lost Katie love
But everything keeps on a-moving
Yeah, everybody's on the go
You don't find things that last anymore
Like an old woven Navajo

[Chorus 2x]

Gallo del Cielo
written by Tom Russell, sung by Ian Tyson

Carlos Zaragoza left his home in Casas Grandes when the moon was full
No money in his pocket, just a locket of his sister framed in gold
He rode into El Sueco, stole a rooster called Gallo Del Cielo
Then he swam the Rio Grande with that fighter nestled
Deep beneath his arm.

El Gallo Del Cielo was a rooster born in heaven so the legends say
His wings they had been broken, he had one eye
Rollin' crazy in his head
And he'd fought a hundred fights, and the legends say
That one night near El Sueco
They'd fought Gallo seven times, and seven times he'd
Left brave roosters dead.

Hola, my Theresa, I am thinking of you now in San Antonio
I have 27 dollars and the good luck of your picture
Framed in gold
Tonight I'll put it all on the fighting spurs of Gallo Del Cielo
And then I'll return to buy the land Villa stole
From father long ago.

Outside of San Diego, in the onion fields of Paco Monteverde
The Pride of San Diego lay sleeping on a fancy bed of silk
And they laughed when Zaragoza pulled the one-eyed
Del Cielo from beneath his coat
But they cried when Zaragoza walked away with a
Thousand dollar bill.

Hola, my Theresa, I am thinking of you now in Santa Barbara
I have fifteen hundred dollars and the good luck of
Your picture framed in gold
Tonight I'll put it all on the fighting spurs of Gallo Del Cielo
And then I'll return to buy the land Villa stole
From father long ago.

Now the moon has gone to hiding and the lantern light
Spills shadows on a fighting sand
Where a wicked black named Zorro faces Gallo del Cielo in the night
But Carlos Zaragoza fears the tiny crack that runs across his rooster's beak
And he fears he has lost the fifty thousand dollars riding on the fight.

Hola, my Theresa, I am thinking of you now in Santa Clara
Yes, the money's on the table, I am holding to
Your good luck framed in gold
And everything we've dreamed of is riding on the spurs of Del Cielo
I pray that I'll return to buy the land Villa stole from father long ago.

Then the signal it was given, and the cocks rose
Together far above the sand
El Gallo del Cielo sunk a gaff into Zorro's shiny breast
They were separated quickly but they rose and fought
Each other thirty seven times
And the legends say that everyone agreed that del Cielo fought the best.

Then the screams of Zaragoza filled the night outside
The town of Santa Clara
As the beak of del Cielo lay broken like a shell within his hand
And they say that Zaragoza screamed a curse upon the
Bones of Pancho Villa
When Zorro rose up one last time and drove del
Cielo through the sand.

Hola, my Theresa, I am thinking of you now in
San Francisco
I have no money in my pocket, I no longer have
Your good luck framed in gold
I buried it last evening with the bones of my
Beloved Del Cielo
And I'll not return to buy the land Villa stole from
Father long ago.

Do the rivers still run muddy outside of my beloved
Casas Grandes?

Oes the scar upon my brother's face turn red when
He hears mention of my name?
Do the people of El Sueco curse the theft of Gallo del Cielo?
Well, tell my family not to worry, I will not return
To cause them shame.

M.C. Horses

We were having a drink at Stockmen's,
Listenin' to the guitars ring.
Jesse said "You know, they sold the M.C. horses."
"I'll be ******.When was that?" I hadn't heard a thing.
"Back in August--100 head and more."

Yeah, the people they come from everywhere
Just to bid on 'em high and low
And thereby own a piece of the legend.
With the cow herd all dispersed the old cavvy she had to go.
Back in August--100 head and more.

Chorus:
So come on boy, run 'em in. We're gonna let this sale begin.
Last of the big remudas of the mightly M. C.
There's horses here for everyone.
Saddle 'em kids let's get her done.
By the time that Oregon sun goes down
This outfit's history--this outfit's history.

So the M. C. Crew they rode 'em all
And the people all gathered 'round.
One ol' boy gave two grand for Banjo.
Banjo took his trailer apart
When he tired to load him up for town
Back in August-- 100 head and more.

If you ever have beer at the Adel Store
Say hi to Chuck and Annie.
They'll show you them big ol' steer heads up there hangin'.
When you ask where have they gone?
Hell, they're gone like the M. C. Cavvy
Back in August--100 head and more.

Repeat Chorus

We were having a drink at Stockmen's
Way out on the sagebrush sea.
Jesse said "You know, they sold the M.C. horses."

Spring Time in Alberta
www.youtube.com/watch?v=kb1tcVxi34Y

Should have seen it in your eyes
I could never read those eyes
So lost in love was I
They'd always take me by surprise
You were dreaming of the southland
Ah, your love comes and goes
It's just like the weather babe
Only heaven really knows

Chorus:
Just like spring time in Alberta
Warm sunny days endless skies of blue
Then without a warning
Another winter storm comes raging through
And the mercury's fallin'
I'm left all alone
Just like spring time in Alberta
Chills me to the bone
I can see the storm clouds comin'
Lord they're dark across the sky
The same look that I've seen so many times
When I've looked into your eyes
So I'll turn up my old collar
Pull my hat way down low
Wind's getting colder now
Dropping down to near zero

chorus
Spring time in Alberta
Chills me to the bone

Four Strong Winds
www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX2K_d7dPRY

Four strong winds that blow lonely,
Seven seas that run high,
All those things that don't change, Come what may.
but our good times are all gone,
And I'm bound for moving on.
I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way.

Think I'll go out to Alberta,
Weather's good there in the fall.
I got some friends that I can go to working for,
Still I wish you'd change your mind
If I asked you one more time,
But we've been through that a hundred times or more.

Four strong winds that blow lonely,
Seven seas that run high,
All those things that don't change, Come what may.
our good times are all gone,
And I'm bound for moving on.
I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way.

If I get there before the snow flies,
if things are going good,
You could meet me if I send you down the fare.
But by then it will be winter
there ain't much for you to do
And those winds they sure can blow cold way out there

Four strong winds that blow lonely,
Seven seas that run high,
All those things that don't change, Come what may.
our good times are all gone,
I'm bound for moving on.
I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way.
I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way.

Okay wrong Ian and Sylvia but I did remember their song and heard it in my head all day long. Took me back to younger days.

I did love the one about the rooster even though it was so sad. And "Four Strong Winds," I remember though I heard in on an American group album.

Foamy looks a little German Shepherdy in the head, do you know what was behind her. I really feel for her. I had very severe social phobias due to things that happened when I was 5 years old. I know I used to watch kids playing outside and wanted so badly to go out and join then. Just couldn't do it.

Foam Dome is probably ACD and Border Collie cross...but Australian Cattle Dogs l00k very GSD...especially if you look at both without any frame of size to compare them with.

Very sensible no nonsense breed shape fer a dawg.

Rick bought me this ornament and it is probably something "like" a GSD but looks ACD too. Wrong colourations but shape is similar.

Henny are you okay? I hardly see you on BYC. I know the warmer weather brings a lot of chores with it but every time I see your avatar, I think poor girl is feeling down.

Lol
I'm fine diva, I'm a hardcore gardener, and the weather here has been unreal, never seen a May so warm. Also started a local food group on face book and I'm trying to get that going.
Once winter hits, and it will, I'll be back.
