I am merely explaining how gender linked traits (mother bird may only give her sons her gender linked traits on chromosome z--her daughters get chromosome w from her which is too small/short to contain gender linked information on it) might make someone believe "hens give more genetics to sons than daughters." :D

Some people do not understand zw gender determination system. :hmm

Belive me I understand it completely but just for the record the size of the chromosome is not a direct indication to the info it has!
Genes are not organized one after another in a neat and tidy organization, the truth is than in between the genes there is a substantial amount of "trash DNA" that don't cary any info!

Trash that is garbage until some science person does research and proves it to be important. Junk that becomes shabby chic. I wish it was neat and tidy and organized...I like that and it takes me forever to UNlearn something once I get it! :cool:

I remember hearing that DNA does not replicate true and there are errors and because our body's cells live, die and are replaced over & over...when I am a baby to the time I am older...I am no longer the SAME person genetically speaking any more.

NEW me...what happened & why? The new me is not shiny and younger... what a rip off! :old

I have seen the terms Longer and Bigger used both for explaining the z chromosome when comparing it to the w chromosome, so I must go by what I read and refer to until someone such as YOU tells me otherwise! :hugs

For me, understanding we are talking about chemicals, that chemicals represent DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)...not simple ON or OFF switches, that DNA is a set of genetic instructions but not exactly like the instructions for a recipe for food we eat...but chemicals that are in different amounts, strengths, ...

My mind starts to fail me when genetics starts into the chemicals. No sniffing GLUE in the classroom...rots what is left of the brain!

The accountant in me wants yes or no (not maybe) and black and white (not grey). I already KNOW that 1 + 1 does not always = 2...depends on who is doing the accounting and who we are reporting to! :sick

The connection between the treat and the gene is like that:
A Gene is a section of DNA that have the info, (AKA THE NUMBER AND THE ORDER OF Amino acids ) in a protein.
Almost all the Enzymes known are proteins ("not every protein is an enzyme but every enzyme is a protein")
Enzymes are the catalyzators of ALL the metabolism process in the cells.
Thy transform a starting material to a needed end products
So after all this is told let take a treat you are familiar to, the black color in chickens.
The black color is present du to the gene C (color in the bird)
The gene C is coding to the enzyme tyrosinase that take (it is more complicated. ...) the Amino acids Tyrosine and change it to Euomelanin which is the black color.
Birds that are recessive white don't have the gene C but it's allele c that don't produce the enzyme so they can't bild melanin from tyrosine so the lack of pigment is making the feathers white. (Dominant white is another story)
SO the connection between a gene to the treat it is responsible on is ALWAYS trughe the bilding/or not building of an enzyme or a protein!

I get mixed up when I have birds that are C/c"+" and should not express recessive white and do.

Dr. Carefoot did a genetic paper on how in some lines (mine is one) recessive white was not recessive in a single dose.

I want pretty straight forward genetics...but oh no...not happening...I want things that are exceptions to the rules. :hmm
