Jiffy wing band on adult chickens

I just bought jiffy wing bands and plan on doing the whole flock. Any tips on doing the older birds?

You can apply the bands without pulling birds off roost if roost about 4' off ground. Otherwise easier to apply in adults. Have little kid you have help arm the tagger pliers. Do not do it over gravel. I carry a white 55-gallon barrel out to tagging site so I have a place to keep everything at comfortable working height on a surface where everything is easy to see.

I did a few and was not able to get it thru the skin. I pushed so hard I bend the pliers. Should I poke a hole with a scalpel first?

You are missing the membrane.

I Got it sorted out- if I push the point thru the skin of the wing with my fingers and then push the tip that went thru the skin to the connector I can then load the pliers while the band is on the wing and it works. I did 7 tonight- it took some time but I will get faster. I appreciate your taking the time to respond.
