Jo-Jo the Androgynous Chicken: Sex my Black Australorp

ChiknGurl, we only have six chickens, five that are most certainly hens and, well, Joseph. There aren't any other roosters in the neighborhood either, so he has no role model. It's funny, when one of our neighbors heard that we had gotten chicks, she said she couldn't wait to hear the rooster crowing. We said we didn't have one and didn't know how wrong we were

Thanks so much to everyone for the diagnoses. I'm kind of concerned because, while nobody around here would mind or tell, we're not legally allowed to have roosters and frankly we don't want one. I guess we'll have to wait and see if he gets aggressive; maybe we'll enjoy having him around after all.

Haha, I'm starting to suspect he might possibly be, silkieluvr

Time to go out and tell my husband it's unanimous-- she's a he.

Thank you, HenMama2

I've been collecting some of the nicer feathers the chickens drop, and just recently have begun to find some with a touch of green iridescence from one of our EEs, but I really can't wait until Joseph starts dropping some of those bright green ones. I'm not 100% sure what I'll do with them yet, but I'm going to find some way to display his gorgeous tail feathers. Maybe a hair ornament of some sort...

I gotta jump in and say BOY. :) My australorp had smaller comb/wattles at 8 months than that. :p Plus there's the saddle feathers, etc. FWIW, neither of my roos have any spurs to speak of and one is almost a year old. They take time to come in. :)

Here's a pic of my australorp at about 5 months:

Wow. What a coincidence. I have a black pullet that I named Joey (Josephine or Joseph) because I have been doubting her gender since the first week. I have her sister to compare her to.
