Johnston Island squid pics and video

Fair warning...pheasant math is worse! Can't have just 2 or 10 or 50 or....like me over 200:p

 Wow! Not sure we have enough species here for me to quite reach that number, but we'll see! I'm headed that way with my Button quail at the moment - I have so many recent hatchlings that I want to keep. I had one cinnamon male in the 'destined for the petshop' cage, but I noticed that the red on his chest went all the way up to his mask (we don't have the red breasted mutation here). Some of my Ivory boys are looking that way too. And I put eggs in the incubator for the Easter hatch-along, so goodness knows what else will pop out to tempt me!

It's funny - I love my cats but I certainly don't need one in every colour. Birds on the other hand...

Take a gander at this video!

Ran across this video of JI....can't believe it has become so overgrown!!!!
A rather boring video of some US Fish & Wildlife volunteers that are sent out there to try and control/irradicate the ant problem on the atoll.

To me it's sad and funny at the same time....the guy not knowing what he was looking at nor what the purpose was....like where he starts off, Arnold Avenue, the 'main street' on JI....the volunteers, call it Refuge Road now, the outdoor theater, the tarmac, Pluto's mound, the bunkers, seawall next to the Waikiki bar & grill, the barracks etc...the Learning Center :lau, was actually a library!!! And then the 'big parking lot' that was where the incinerator was located....plus other sites on the isle....just really sad to see JI that way now but it's good for the wildlife....no one will bother/harass them.

Yeah, it's still pretty sad, considering the 'good times' I had while there! Always knew they were going to shut it down after they burned up all the old mutations from the cold war, both ours, Russia's and Germany's.

The most pristine coral reef in the world, loved snorkeling and diving that reef. Worked 8 weeks on then they would fly you to any destination in the world you wanted to go for 2 weeks...R&R.
The loneliness/isolation could get to you though, if your the sort of person that has to be around the hustle and bustle of cities. Me...didn't bother me one bit...I had already been on other way more remote islands without any amenities.
Food was good, if not somewhat monotonous but alcohol was cheap and flowed abundantly at all 9 bars on the rock! :lau that statement should give you some idea of the mentality on the rock! :gig Fishing was fantastic, too! We could go off shore in an old WWII Higgins boat and fish for Ono or wahoo, lots of fun.
Sunsets and sunrises were some of the most mesmerizing, picture perfect, anyone could even imagine. Saw some of the most beautiful rainbows I have ever seen anywhere!
I apologize, just ranting away, lost in my own memories of JI.
