Joined BYC Tonight- Need help convincing the neighbors

Hi and welcome from Indiana. We live on four acres and still talk to the neighbors about chickens. We try to make sure everyone in the community is happy. I offer eggs and homemade food from my garden just to make sure everyone is still ok with our growing flock. So far no complaints and the food is well received! I also made it a point to write my number down for each neighbor and told them that if ever they need eggs or if there is a problem with the chickens, just call anytime. We have no laws against chickens here but if they feel they can call me first with a problem, it will be handled quickly. Just my 2 cents, good luck, I hope things work out in your favor!

I think the advice so far is great....make sure the neighbors know you will be quick to fix anything that concerns them, and offer your phone number up front. If you think you will have extra eggs, then, by all means, give them to the neighbors periodically. I have a regular list of people who get my extra eggs, and it helps a lot. I also had to make sure the coop was pretty. That's not a bad thing since you will also get to look at a nice coop.

I have Buff Orpingtons. They do announce when they lay eggs, but are otherwise very quiet birds. My neighbors have told me that they like the soft clucking they sometimes hear.

On the other hand, my DSO has RIRs, a GLWyandotte, a BR and an Australorp. The only quiet one in his bunch is the BR. The Australorp is the loudest. I'm not sure why that is.

I hope you have good luck with your neighbors. Always try to work with them before they even think of complaining, and I'm sure it will be a great experience.

from California!

I am smack dab in the middle of suburbia with 5 chickens. We are not allowed to have them, but we talked with all of our neighbors on either side and behind. They were all OK with it. We've had our girls for a year now.

So far, no one has had any problems with them. Smell and flies have not been an issue. They DO make a bit of noise at egg laying time and that makes me a little nervous, but it only lasts for a few minutes per bird. Our girls don't normally lay until after 9:00 a.m. so it's not too early. We have barking dogs around us that are far more of a nuisance.

Go talk to them...bring them baked goods when you go knock on their door! You might be surprised that everyone is cool about it. Make sure you promise not to have roosters!

Thank you all for your kind replies and encouragement to speak with our neighbors- I have now spoken with four out of 5 neighbors and they all have been wonderful- 1 is really excited even!

Thank you once again!

I think the outreach you've done with your neighbors is the key. I work for a city and have spent time in the code enforcement department and it's usually the roos and their crowing that get people in trouble with their neighbors. As you're looking to purchase pullets you won't have to worry about that (unless a roo slips thru the hatchery's screening). Good luck with the last neighbor!

We've got buff orpington's and I'm sure you'll enjoy owning them.
They're great chickens.
