Northern Europe
Hi, I am Pokka and I have joined BYC from northern Europe. During the last years I have visited BYC already a number of times, looking for information. I own 8 hens and understand chicken math.

Year 1: started with 1 Vorwerk chicken, 1 White Sussex, 1 German Sperber, 1 Bovans Black. I learned to love them, each with her own personality.
Year 2: added 1 Maran. I learned that adding a single animal to a flock can get cruel. Also learned that chicken are strong animals: a 3 cm skin wound in the neck, from cheek-to-cheek, healed restless.
Year 3: extended our run. Organised 2 sets of breeding eggs (English Cream Legbar and Swedish Flower chicken) for natural breeding. I kept 3 of the pullets. Obviously, I somehow mixed them up; I still don't have green eggs...

Therefore, I plan a next round of natural breeding for 2019. This time, it will be 1 set of eggs, of both English Cream Legbars and Ostfriesian Möwen combined.

I am looking forward to a good time here at BYC, and to learning a lot more!

Thanks for the welcomes!

My difficulties so far:
- convincing my children, that some of the older hens will have to leave, before we can have more eggs hatching. I wouldn't have problems slaughtering them myself, but the kids are not going to like that. All chicks that I had left over so far, moved to a colleague with a farm. There they can live a happy life (and will be eaten in the end, without my offspring knowing this)
- a run that partially turns really muddy in fall/winter
