Is she a Rhode Island Red, or a production red? I dont care because I love her, she's beautiful and the SWEETEST bird, but she is so pretty and dark I thought I'd ask.
I honestly don't know how to tell the two apart. I'm thinking the production reds are a little lighter in color than the RIR and I think your girl isn't as dark as some RIR I have seen, but she has baby feathers right now. If it means anything, the production red is bred from the RIR so they would be similar except the production reds lay more eggs.
Did you get her from the feed store? From what I hear, hatcheries have very poor quality RIR's. But, they look brown to me while sex links look more red with white. I think you have a RIR
Ok thanks to you both. Is there any way to tell, or just wait til she's older and take pics then? She's so nice, as soon as I pet her she snuggles down and goes to sleep. Lol.
You may never know. Like goldfinches says, the hatchery quality birds don't always conform with the standards for a particular breed. So their RIR might be light enough to be mistaken for a production red or vise versa.
