July Hatch-a-long

Holy crap! I missed a bunch again! Argh!
Sorry to those who've lost chicks & had bad eggs. Some incubators too can be very fussy! My new genesis is only slightly better than my LG, in that it really holds temp well. If only I didn't have to STILL add water every 4 hours! I'm dreaming of a Brinsea!

Love the log idea! I take rough notes. It helps me get a feel on how a new incubator works. Something more permanent, organized & better detailed would be better. Think I'll go buy a special notebook.

Yeah, so I got 3 broodies now, so incubator not an issue. I checked on my 2nd broody's eggs, hoping they weren't going to turn out like my first broody's. They're both first timers at this. We have life in those eggs! Yay! 6 days to go! I tried to tempt a broody off her nest so I could pull a few eggs out for my first broody. No dice! I think I will run the incubator & wait for an opportunity to get the eggs. I can keep them in incubator until such time as broody #1 gets off her nest. Then I can make the switch. Oh the drama! Lol!

Good luck with your broodies!

my eggs from my birds aren't whimpy I set them and forget them till they chirp and remind me that they're due lol...I stick them in the little delivery room incubator with higher humidity and they zip out like little champs!

400

Look at mini chick, so adorable. Will have more pics when the other 4 dry. I FINALLY GOT A LAV ORP from my lav roo and black/lav split hen!!! Im so excited.

Wow you're only adding water every 4 hours?! that's pretty good I'd say compared to mine. Well, since I've modified it, it's doing good humidity wise. I was doing great before I added the eggs, and started getting up to 102, I just moved the thermostat back where it was with my first hatch.... and I just checked - the light turned off at 100* sweet! it's finally working again. If only I had a broody... I'd lend my incubator out to people that want to hatch and raise their own chickens. I have a neighbor that's been wanting chickens for quite some time. Yeah. I think I'm going to do that. I hope one of my marans turns broody. They're still very young, one pecked at my hand when I was trying to reach for the eggs one day. That's a good sign, right? If so, she'll always have her own private nesting box with her own waterer and food dish.

I have a graph paper notebook, and make my own log. Date, Day, Time, Humidity, Degrees, Notes. I think what I want to do next year is purchase a binder, get some paper protector sleeves, and keep my graph paper... take pictures of each hatch, hen to chick and put them in my note book. Also get a chick chart and log what day each one hatched and if they had cord issues etc.. kinda like a portfolio! especially if I am going to start breeding heritage.

I had 6 shipped lavender orp eggs...1 was a dud 1 quit early...2 died just before hatch day...3 hatched and 2 died yesterday the day after they hatched...they never seemed strong!! it's the breeder...!! the birds are too closely related!!
Oh no I am so sorry. And shipped eggs are not cheap at all - I wonder if you can get a refund. or is it rude to ask? How does one handle the situation?
