July Hatch-a-long

I have 13 in lockdown rockin n rollin steady, due Tues but last hatch was early so expecting these also. Broody 1 due 27th, broody 2 and 12 from staggered hatch due 29th, 12 in another incubator due 31st and broody 3 due 1st. Impatiently awaiting arrival, 30 hours now of watching eggs rolling around. Daughter just yelled at me to sleep till I see a pip but I may miss something.

My broody was off the nest really early today (6 a.m.), so I went in to check her eggs for pips. It is officially day 19, and at least one egg (the one with the air cell on the side) is softly peeping. No pips yet, but all 5 remaining eggs are coming along. I took her absence as a good time to candle, and it was dark enough to see that all 5 seem to be poised to hatch. Fingers and toes crossed. She is my first time with a broody, and she is in the coop with the other 8 hens in a nest on the floor in the corner.

I just keep telling myself that hens have been hatching eggs in the company of other hens for thousands of years without my help.

No noise from the ones in the incubator, but they are a day behind. It looks like 3 of the 6 are going strong with another possible, one clear, and one quitter.

Starting to pace and worry. I have to keep busy today, or I'll drive her crazy.

I have a question (possibly stupid).

When I lock down the eggs in the incubator tomorrow morning, is there a way to place the eggs that is better than others? air cell up? They will be on their sides on shelf liner over wire raised to the height of the turner.

I have no idea what mine is but probably a red sex link crossed back to a rhode island red. I don't know why some hatcheries false advertise.
very nice i love it, i guess by your picts that i have long island reds

am i right. always wonder

i dont know what he is lol

Looks like some Ameraucana in him.
Wow, I missed a bunch! Sorry for your troubles Gen9, but you had a great hatch nonetheless! Now you learned what to do if it happens again

Great pics! I love those black star hens! Mine is 3 years old & currently broody for the 2nd time in her life. She's a great mom!
Thanks Shellz! I wish mine would go broody. She's one of my favorite hens.

gen9 are her legs a whitish hue? she looks like a New Hampshire red!
They once had a whitish tint to them, looked kinda mauve, but a little more brown. This is what they look like now.

400

That would be cool if she was a NH Red.

ETA: .... can you tell I haven't slept in 3 days?! Yes her legs are a very pale, very whitish.

Selecting the eggs for the next hatch a I set aside 30, but this time Not going to have so many to the point that I have to keep opening the bator during lockdown.

To avoid finding another dead chick, I separated the other chick with the cord problems but gave it a buddy to cuddle with. I'm treating it with iodine 3x a day. Is this ok or does it need to be alone? The chick I put with it is pretty mild so I'm not worried about any pecking.

I had a couple with a bit of cord. I didn't do anything special & they cleared up just fine. :) I even had one with curled toes. No heroic measures & it straightened out on its own before leaving the brooder. I just observe these little ones - making sure they can eat, drink & get around.

Sounds like your doing it right.
